Character/Costume Description

A Jawa with a penchant for scavenging
or
trading for the shiniest of the shiny
droid
parts
and salvage.

Robe:
Cotton monkscloth, which was hand
dyed
with RIT Dye in brown and sunshine
orange.
This ended up being a two step process
to
make sure it was dark enough. After I
sewed
the robe, I zig-zagged along the edges,
and
then began the weathering process by
picking out loose strands. The robes
are
weathered with a roughly applied
sandstone
colored acrylic paint that was brushed
and
ground into the fabric.

Due to shrinkage of the fabric during
the
dying process, I needed to make the
sleeves
separate, and hide the seams under the
edge of the hood and the bandoleers.

Hood:
The hood is made from the same
monkscloth, and fully lined with a
simple
black cotton
fabric. The opening is secured with a
length
of armature wire that is sandwiched
between
the outer shell and the lining.

The weathering on the ties and the edge
of
the hood was done in a similar manner
to
the
robe, using sandstone toned paint, and
manually fraying the edges of the ties.

Mask:
The mask is built on a paintball mask
base,
with layers of fabric adhered using hot
glue
and velcro. The eye-sheild is covered
by a
thin layer of black spandex that can be
seen
out of, but not in to. Strips of the same
black cotton fabric from the hood were
used to
create a ragged appearance on the
mask,
and to fit securely around the eyes that
are
mounted on to the mask.

Eyes:
Battery operated LED tea lights are used
as
the base for the eyes, which are hot-
glued
onto the mask. The batteries and LEDs
are
set in a manner that they can be
replaced
as
needed. The yellow caps are bubble-
gum
capsules that were painted yellow and
adhered
to the top of the tea lights.

Boots:
An old pair of knee-high boots were
repurposed for this, and wrapped in all
of
the scraps
left over from the robe and hood
creation.
They are intentionally heavily
weathered,
as it
made sense for scavengers like Jawas to
re-use shreads from old robes to cover
their
boots. The sandstone paint is the same
as
what is on the robes and hoods.

Bandoleers:
Two brown leather bandoleers are worn
in a
cross configuration over the chest. One
is a
reproduction British martini-Henry
Bandolier, and the other is a
reproduction
British P-
1903 Five Pocket bandolier. Both were
weathered using a mix of sand paper,
paint,
shoe-polish, and hitting them on things
repeatedly. An extension was added to
the
5-
pocket bandolier in order to make it fit
more comfortably. That extension was
then
weathered and abused in a similar
manner.

Additional Accessories:
- Black balaclava mask to hide skin.
- Black elbow length gloves in spandex
