I was encouraged to start a WIP thread to show off what I have been cooking up. I began working on a Y-wing pilot costume based on the new source material available in the Star Wars Costumes of the Original Trilogy book. Using that as a guide, here is what I have so far.....

Legginigs: I started out making this part. They feature the correct front pleating featured on the original costume.

Flight suit: This is a grey cotton coverall from Betty Mills that has had the thigh pockets added, a tab added under the existing collar, and I put small flaps over the breast zippers so they are not seen under the flak vest. I have not modified the shoulder pocket as I am still figuring that out, but will in the near future.

Vest: this has been a challenge since even in the new pictures, the angles are limited. I need to make the belly pouch bigger so that is not attached but is in the pictures just for reference. Here is what I have come up with so far....

The Belt: straight forward...

Ok, another progress update.....

I made some major progress on the vest. All structural work is done, the remainder is just decorative work. The front layer is not yet stitched down so that I can still have access to the inner area for mounting greebies. I added a yellow tag I made that is made to look similar to the one in the movie costume. I also made a new belly pouch that is more correctly shaped. It too is not attached yet. Here is my mock-up, with the hose I made included.....

The hose is made of upholstery piping with a sleeve over it. Nice and robust, but lightweight. I have a plan to mount it.

I had to do some homework to figure out the shoulder straps. At first glance, they look like they are ribbed similarly to the X-wing vest. However, I looked closely at screen shots and it looks to me like a watered down version of that look. To me, the straps look to be covered with a lumpy and uneven ribbing, as if there were no plastic tubs in there. Here is what I was looking at and what I can up with.....

Lastly, I made my final modification to the flight suit. I made the shoulder pocket look more like the one on the movie version. The new book clearly shows it is not like the X-Wing cod cylinder pocket. It is actually a three layered pocket. I made one out of the butt pockets I removed and put it over the existing pencil pocket on the coveralls. This way I can still use the existing pencil pockets for code cylinders, if I choose to wear them....

The one on the right is my new pocket, the one on the left is the pocket on the sleeve of the "sacrificial" coveralls. Here is what I based this off of....

My goal here is to make this costume accurate to the new production pictures in the book, not the existing standard. If anyone (judges mainly) would like me to post pictures of the pattern I made for the vest, I can do so. Not to be presumptuous, but if mine looks good, I am happy to offer my work up to help shape new standards.

Looking good. Smile

Not a big deal right now, but just an FYI... But the arm pocket is actually sewn on at a slant, like a pencil pocket. The top rotates toward the chest a little.

For example...

You're doing great work so far! What are your plans for the helmet?

Exvellent choice, that's what I have. You're reminding me that I have to remake my vest now that we have good pictures.

Oh, I love this ...

I don't suppose you would be willing to take on a commission for another one of those vests? Smile

I finally had a chance to do a bit of a dress rehearsal with what I have so far. I still need to make the ejection harness (just need the fabric store to get more 2" webbing). I also need to get gloves (found a source already), add so greebies, and weather all of it. Well, all that and the helmet, but that is not needed for approval, of course I am getting one just the same.

Good evening Tymae, I congratulate you for the work you did for this costume;

I am doing the same and I am looking for the mounting plans of the Y-wing

helmet, as well as the dimensions of the aluminum tubes that are on the belt.

Those are two things that I can not find; could you help me please, thank you very much

Good night

Krystrom
