I'd be most grateful for input from the costume judges please - I have been searching high and low for the brown dress fabric and so far this is the best I've come up with. To my mind it has the same "evening dress" type of feel as it's light weight and drapey, it has the right bubble effect, it's the right colour (chocolate brown/black) and it has embroidered brown outlines, BUT the shapes are not strictly diamonds - some are diamonds/squares but some are rectangles and some are diamonds/squares with an extra bit etc. Would this pass please (as I'm beginning to lose the will to live!!)?

The second one is the REAL fabric

(Sorry, I don't know how to get the photos to come out)

Not a judge, but I think you would certainly need to cut that fabric such that the rectangles are oriented diagonally, which might require cutting on the bias. It's hard to tell from your photo, but it looks like they're horizontal rather than diagonal on the fabric.

You would want to check the width of the fabric against how big your pattern pieces will need to be. That could be a limiting factor of if you can get the right angle to cut the pattern at.

Thank you for that Jenna - not being very good at sewing that side of things completely slipped my mind and indeed you're right, it's quite a narrow fabric and won't do at all. Also, just photographing it and putting it up here's made me realize that I have to go back to square one anyway!

The pain of the fabric search is real.

I used this fabric from Mood and lined it with some gold fabric from Joann's: https://www.moodfabrics.com/turkish-coffee-loosely-woven-cotton-crepe-315126

In no way a judge, but my costume was approved a few months ago.

Fabulous costume Julie, just looked at it on Instagram. Lovely brown dress fabric. Did you use anything to stiffen the collar of the cloak as it seems to work so well?

Also, a question for anyone - approx how much fabric does the cloak need?

Thanks! There is medium-weight interfacing in the collar. I also used magnets inside the layers to be able to stand the collar up and close it.

This depends on the width of your fabric and your height. I am 5'9" and had 60" wide fabric and I purchased 12 yards of each fabric and lining for the cloak. I do have a couple a yards left but it is good to have extra.
