Hello everybody and nice greetings from Austria.
I'm new but read a lot and did a lot of research before I started to work on my first dress.
One year ago I bought the first fabrics, drew the first pattern and after a movement this year - my bf and I now have our own “sew and craft room“ I finally started.
My tournüre “bustle“ is finished.
So this is were I start - have look, take a seat and I hope for a lot of feedback.

Uh, I look forward to seeing your black invasion done. Lovely costume.
I'd advise you to also have some petticoats in front and sides to add fullness all around. If you need a reference for petticoats then I have a website I can link.
Excellent ruffle. _________________

Thanks for your comment! It's hard to see but if the shape isn't right I will add ruffles in the front of course. At this time it looks good for me. Maybe I'll add more later in the front.
Today I made a test version for the skirt to see If the shape and length is right. I used a cheap fabric for testing this. First it was too long but now I think it's right.
Here, you can also see the shape of the whole skirt better. Now I can buy the velvet without ordering too much of it.

Hi, great start to your build. I would advise to do comparison shots of the original and yours as you go to ensure the correct shape.
As was mentioned previously, you will need some sort of petticoat for the front.
I have made this gown already, and it is a big task, so good luck with it. I personally use two petticoats under the dress (a shorter one nearer the legs to allow for comfort when walking as you will get HOT very quickly).
Am always here if you have any questions |

It's a great start. Just keep us posted and we will provide feedback along the way. Definitely do comparisons all the time to make sure you stay on target. The memory is a fickle thing. _________________

Long time - no update.
Sorry first for not posting - I made a huge "costume holiday" as we were moving to another flat and some other things.
First I made the "real" skirt from velvet.
The next "big project" are the spikes.
I ordered 5m of flannel so make them.
The first fabric I used was too thick - and the fabric was shrinking about 50% (because of the spikes).
So here I was finished with 5m of the new fabric flannel.
And began to make the spikes...
after making those I realised that the fabric was not shrinking 50% but 75% ( ! ) so from 1,40m there was just 40cm of spikes...;.
That are just the sleeves but not the whole "jacket".
I wanted to order more from the fabric but my seller doesn't sell it anymore. So monday I went to another shop and looked for flannel. Well they have flannel but another touch (thinner and more "fleecy") and another black... so yes... I ordered the fabric + new sleeves.
So the last things you see I cannot use anymore.
Now I ordered 30m ( ! ) of flanell - this will take a long time to do.
1m of flannel weights about 250gm - the whole jacket will be about 5kilos on my shoulders.
I tried to calculate the hours for the jacket and "all snails" and doing spikes of out the snail will be about ~330 hours to make. |

Great to see you back at it, but yeah; finding out you miscalculated is so annoying. No one wants to do the same work twice. _________________

Thanks everybody for looking and the nice comments!
Well on Saturday my fabric arrived at the shop.
First I was cutting the fabric in pieces, washed everything and after that my better-half/boyfriend began to draw the circles with me...;. I asked him if he would like to help me and I'm very thankful he helps me with that.
So yesterday we began to draw all the circles.

That's so nice; it's also great to have someone to work with when making a costume.
Good luck on round two. _________________

It's super exciting to see you working on this again. The shape you have for the petticoat is great. Good look with all of the spirals! _________________

Thanks everybody for the responses .
I'm still sewing all those snails... - BUT - just about 4meters left from 35.
On my Facebook (private) and Instagram (public) I'm always posting new pictures - so for "all" updates there is more stuff.
I want to post just major things here - like when everybody is able to see something "new" not snails, snails, more snails... ;.

It's good to hear that you are making progress. The details in these costumes take forever, but it's always worth it in the end. _________________

I fully agree with Jenna; the details are what really makes a costume pop.
Share a picture when you have all your snails done. We want to see them. _________________
