Greetings Rebels!

After finishing off all of my Rogue One costumes I've realized that my Yavin Operations Officer shirt is a great start to making a OT Rebel Commander costume. I have a few options for pants but waiting to see what path I take for the jacket... I came across a few threads that mention the USSR afghanistan jacket and then the Rothco Coyote Brown jacket as seen here on Amazon
https://www.amazon.com/Rothco-Soft-Shell-Tactical-Jacket/dp/B009K5JAPW?th=1

the one thing I notice about the Rothco jacket is the bottom pockets are set in and not on top of the fabric. Not sure if that's approvable or not. I'm looking for fabric to add to the top to create the yoke but wondering if anyone knows if this would make an appropriate base jacket to start with.

Hey Smile

Just to clarify you mean this costume?

http://newsite.rebellegion.com/rebel-officers-battle-of-yavin/

The rothco is soft shell so its the wrong fabric.

The USSR afghanistan jacket looks as little dark and has cuffs,

The BDU jacket is the one most people start with.

The Russian Afghanistan jacket has quite a few things that would be challenging to adapt- including action backs, which are not something we see on original trilogy officers.

The Rothco jacket linked above is also not one I would reccomend for a base- there are quite a few things that won't work beyond just the pockets that would be very difficult to change.

This is the Rothco jacket people mean. Smile It's technically listed as a shirt, which may be why you didn't see it.

https://smile.amazon.com/gp/product/B000KCW5LA

I have process pictures for adapting the shirt- the rank is on the wrong side in these pictures, and keep in mind I did this all by hand because I was working on it away from the machine. I've since gone back and added machine topstitching around the yoke. Basically, the collar needs to be modfied, the buttons removed, elbow patches removed and I think there were tabs at the waist I took off too.

Yes that's the costume I'm referring to!

OK thank you that makes more sense, the Rothco jacket didn't seem right to me but I had seen someone post that they used it.

So something like this would be where I would start

I'd recommend using the one I linked. The bottom pockets are bellows, and while you could probably take the pockets off and match the fabric needed to change the bottom ones into a bellows pocket, that's a lot of work if there are ones that already have it.

Great! Thanks again, do you recommend buying a shirt in a larger size so that it's more of a jacket or is the "shirt" sized large enough?

I got my regualr size, but I'd recommend looking at size charts and reading the reviews- there were buyer uploaded pictures if I recall. I'm a woman buying men's sizing, so that may be a factor on sizing?

I actually got that Rothco one that Kristina linked. They are pretty big and I had to order a second one. Luckily I had a buddy that could use my "jacket".
Though I have a pretty slim build, so just check the Sizecharts and remember that you will be wearing a shirt under it. With small modifications it is the best and most comfy "jacket" I could find.

Cool, thanks. I was going to order a size larger but decided to just get an XL and see how it fits, I guess I can always return it but I think it's going to be OK as is. I also ordered the Kona fabric so I'm excited to get started on the Commander. I guess since I already have so many parts I'm going to go with the Rogue One version instead of the OT version for now. I may change it up down the line and do both if this jacket really is that comfy! lol

I am glad that you are making the Rogue One version. It is kind of lonely being one of a kind. Please let me know if you have any questions. Good luck with your project.

Edit: Make sure that your belt buckle does not have any sharp edges. Mine cut up my shirt at an event when I wore the costume the first time. The edges did not seem to be sharp when I rubbed my fingers over them but the fabric of the shirt did not survive longer than a couple of minutes moving around. I had to repair my shirt before I could get my other costumes approved.

Im making it too:)

Its just taking me a while to hit the right shade of light tan with the dye sampling.- its got that tiny hint of yellow in it....its always yellow isnt it.

I've made the trousers though, I'm mid way through writing the guide for the knee pads and the big partial bellows pockets, so i have pics if you need any help with that.

That is great. I cannot wait to see your finished costume. I am thinking about upgrading my dark brown Tru-Spec BDU pants to a pair of self-made cargo pants with the correct knee padding and pockets now that I found a source for dark brown cotton-synthetic twill fabric.

Sounds great! I'm still too new at sewing to try and attempt to make my own pants, although I did just make a "skirt" for my Jaffa Armor build (I know wrong franchise!). I'd love to see pics though and follow your progress.

I just ordered everything thanks to Patricia for all the help!

Do not worry we all started once upon a time. We know how you feel. My younger sister always says practice makes perfect. You will be sewing pants and other things soon it is just a matter of practice.

I love Stargate. I watched the film in the movie theater when it came out and have DVD boxes with Star Gate SG1, Star Gate Atlantis, and Star Gate Universe.

I am glad that I was able to help you. I am looking forwards to seeing your progress.
