I have seen a number references to people being interested in making Talon Karrde costumes but cannot find any standards or examples of a costume having been approved. I don't think there is an issue of getting references, though he seems to have changed outfits a bit (though there are possibly three main ones).

Does anyone know of a member who was approved as Talon Karrde? Any advice on which costume would be best? (I mean, how much should or shouldn't I look like a pirate?)

I have been looking into this further and have started to collect a lot of reference pictures related to the following:

- Graphic Novels:
-- Heir to the Empire
-- Dark Force Rising
-- The Last Command
-- Union
- Stories
-- The New Jedi Order: The Unifying Force (cover of Japanese edition)
-- First Contact
- Guidebooks
-- The Essential Guide to Planets and Moons
-- New Essential Guide to Characters
- RPG Sourcebooks
-- Heir to the Empire Sourcebook
-- Dark Force Rising Sourcebook
- Figurines
-- Heir to the Empire Comic Pack Action Figure
-- Star Wars Minatures
- Collector cards
-- Topps Star Wars Finest
- Video games
-- Star Wars: Rebellion

Should any of these not be regarded as valid references?
Does anyone know of any other official references I should look at?
Many of the references in Wookiepedia won't have pictures and it is acknowledged that some of the descriptions in the early novels don't match the images used in the official graphic novel versions of the same story.

As I see it, there are 2 key costumes that are commonly shown in a lot of images and at least 3 other ones which probably can't be documented enough to be used in Rebel Legion.

I have started a GDrive collection of the better images for each (I have many more but for now these will give you an idea of the costumes): https://drive.google.com/drive/folders/1QhtHUbTffmtFWYEKHu_wlfst1vTK9MiW?usp=sharing

Both of those seem to have the same pants, boots and a grey singlet, which can be seen some images:

The other costumes are:

Talon Karrde at Luke and Mara's Wedding:

Talon Karrde as a pirate:

Talon Karrde in First Contact:

I am interested in the jacket and shirt version, but obviously how different publications portray it is slightly different. Is there any guide to using illustrations to design standards and build costumes, if there are no relevant photos of real clothing? How much detail is needed in the references? I have some rear, side and complete body images but they are sometimes to be at a distance, which limits how much detail is visible.

Thanks,

Sorontar

Hello Sorontar,

What a wonderful idea. I am a big fan of the Timothy Zahn books as well.

Not sure if there is a Talon Karrde costume out there, but I certainly think that there should be one.

I will look into this.

Kindest regards,

Evert

Well, I have asked around and apparently this hasn't been done before. It really surprised me, as it's such a great character.

I agree with some of the people I spoke to that we would love to see this done some time, so I'll be keeping an eye on this thread.

Clear skies!

Thanks for asking around Evert.

I currently have the beard, moustache and the long hair (and the charming personality and a collection of bad puns) for Talon. The costume also doesn't seem too complex or expensive to make. I have an existing jacket that might be able to be adapted as either the vest or jacket (or just used as the basis for a pattern).

So far, the simplified costume element list is something like:

    * long hair, beard and long moustache (black with grey or white streaks preferred, but not essential, should be at least shoulder length hair)
    * Black boots, spats and gaiters
    * Medium or dark brown pants
    * Belt, buckle
    * Holster (gun not essential) strapped to the belt but not the leg
    * Grey singlet (like a t-shirt without sleeves)
    * (optional) single hand blaster of an appropriate design

There are two variations for the rest of the costume:

    1) Vest: Dark brown long vest with prominent fur edging in a lighter brown/tan
    2) Jacket and shirt: Dark brown long jacket with fur inner lining and collar in a lighter brown/tan, shorter dark brown shirt with collar (can be sleeveless)

The design of the vest and jacket is very similar, but I need to work out the template. Both have shoulder wings and some decorative buckle-like element on the front of the left and right chest. That is probably the only complex element. I don't have a 3D printer but I think it can be recreated using other means. By long, I mean hip/crotch length.

There seem to be two different handguns that could be used but I am yet to work out whether either are a known type.

I am also not sure about pouches for the belt. I will have to look harder at the images I am collecting.

I have added 109 image files to the GDrive in the ImageArchive folder - https://drive.google.com/drive/folders/1u2lv7rPM6FT2B4d8ZHTmGSCVs6RJtkWb?usp=sharing

This includes a metadata file which explains the filenaming convention and original sources of the images - https://docs.google.com/document/d/1cDuB2QV3PVFl7GutcOoRhNbnsvq9fJFV5m5wAPKNw0c/edit?usp=sharing

My next step is looking through them and designing a costume proposal. I have also posted in the Costume and Prop Making > Tutorials subforum, asking about aspects of these costumes that are a common occurrence for characters and costume standards - http://www.forum.rebellegion.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=115223

I know there are various other Legion threads/archives/spreadsheets that contain similar costume resources. If you want to copy the image archive data set over and get me to work from there, you are free to do so. However, you will need to update/add to the metadata file to note the changes.
