Yeah it can be a bit hit and miss :/ Both first and secondhand markets :/
Footwear is the bane of many a costumer's life Any genre at that...
The weathering tutorial Hayley (Ember) linked to is a great one and uses the same kind of boot (though without the strapping) And yes, artist quality acrylic paint works really well on Vinyl. There seems to be a really good chemical bond there. Acrylic spray also works.
I was hoping to be able to find a local solution (as per the thread intention) but our population size means it's unlikely to find an option always in stock. This is definitely one of those areas where you can luck into something around the corner (I scored a lot of shoes and boots at Salies, and other charity shops) or import.
By the way yes, I mentioned brown dye, it would only really be effective on worn leather, as in that particular example I linked to, because dye is transparent- you cannot go lighter only darker. Dye is also additive meaning whatever under colour is there will affect the outcome. In that example the leather had already faded/worn back to a dark grey.
Dyeing over freshly blackened leather will not work. Even when you strip back any coatings. You *may* get a tonal effect depending on the dye and the original colour process and hide.
Going lighter needs an opaque paint. That can be risky- it can be patchy or streaky. That said with sponges you can build up layers and essentially do a reverse weathering as per the above tutorial
Also, here we can talk local The leather paints at Mr Minit etc are really not good- they are not very flexible so crack. Use the stuff from Lapco (they sell pretty much everything you need) or if you have vinyl boots the most readily accessable acrylic paint is Chromacryl. I have art I painted more years ago than I care to admit that still look bright and new. _________________ facebook | website | tumblr | dA

I got my boots from a saddlery as they are riding boots (same with my sith boots) That way (although no zips aren't a requirement for the RL) I was able to have boots without zips. The boots are a bit pricey but look fantastic. _________________ "You were the Chosen One" Obi Wan to Anakin in ROTS |

Just a head's up: Nick's Fabrics on Dominion road are having a relocation sale. 50% off all fabrics and given their fabrics were $2, $4 or $8/m this is really pretty good. I'm going to see what linen I can pick up and also if there is anything RL related. _________________ facebook | website | tumblr | dA

I'm currently putting together a PT style Jedi belt - but have got majorly stuck trying to find an appropriate buckle.
Anyone got an suggestions, or info to share on where they got theirs?
Would prefer to pick up something locally if possible (like a shop in Auckland, or a NZ website). |

Did you have a particular buckle style in mind? I bought my jedi belt already made with the PT Obi-Wan style buckle, I never found anything in local stores that matched (it's a unique style). The 'Anakin' style are long/thin side release buckles, but the slender metal versions are not as easy to find as the square plastic ones (let me know if you need help getting a buckle from the US cheaply, I have a mailbox service).
There is someone who has made PT Obi-Wan style buckles in the RL, but is based overseas (again, can help you source one). Sorry I can't be of more help sourcing buckles locally, checking local emporiums might yield something useful. It's been a while since I actively searched for buckles locally, but it is something I'll be looking for soon (want to remake my old belt) - though I do tend to keep an eye on belts when I'm out shopping, just in case I spot something 'jedi-like' _________________

Hi All, I am putting together a Mara Jade costume (green dress) but am finding it hard to get a material that would be appropriate for the shoulder armour. Does anyone have any suggestions? Thanks |

Hi - you're talking about this one?
A few layers of a material like wonderflex or worbla (backed with foam) could work for that - being a plastic that can be cut with scissors and shaped with hot water/hair dryer/heat gun, good for those projects that don't have a complex shape requiring vac-forming etc. There are a few places in NZ that stock them (I have yet to work with it myself, but there are lots of on-line tutorials). Then there is also styrene/abs (like stormtrooper armour) which is thicker, but can also get a reasonable curve with a heat gun. If you find a pvc pipe big enough, you might be able to cut the pieces from that (I've made bracelets from smaller pipe diameters) - but would require stronger tools to cut the shapes due to the thickness. _________________

So, lovely people, can anyone recommend a place to get leather from? Pref in Auckland and not too expensive. I've pretty much finished the material part of my Jedi costume and looking for belt stuff. Or, failing that, has anyone seen any wide ladies belts that might be able to be wrangled into one? Either black or brown as I have boots to match both.
Oh and was passing centrepoint fabrics in Newmarket the other day and they've got a 30% sale on right now should anyone be interested. Didn't pop in as I had an impatient male with me at the time. |

Ah Balls. Have to work this weekend but on annual leave from Monday. Could possibly pick up another time and don't mind paying for materials. |
