So I've finally decided to take the plunge and make this Leia costume!

I have a couple questions:

First, this fabric (Joann's microsuede in "cornstalk") - Yes or No? http://www.joann.com/sew-classics-microsuede/xprd757799.html#q=microsuede&start=6

Second, does anyone have a pattern they'd recommend I use or modify for the bodice of the dress? I'm still on the newbie side, sewing-wise, and I don't have a dress-form to play with, so an actual pattern would help me for this part of it!

Thank you!

I'd say that fabric is about as close as you can get, so that is a go. I will have to defer to someone who has made this themselves, though, as to which patterns are best.

I have the same fabric. I think it has a shiny underside, right? For me it was the closest I could get.

As for patterns, I am looking on medieval costume patterns for this, but I haven't started mine yet. Don't worry about not having enough fabric, since the seams are shorter than a floor length medieval dress.

My choices are Butterick B4827 and Simplicity 4940, and I'm planning to do a lot of mix and match for the pieces and make a lot of adjustments. There is not a pattern that is close to this costume in particular.

I have another question: is a back zipper acceptable if it's hidden? Or it's the side zipper preferred? Both my patterns have back closures and I prefer the zipper over the corset lacing.

Hiya.
I'm making this costume myself and got a WIP thread, if you need inspiration/advice.

I think the color is fine, but what is the backside? All the microsuedes I looked at had darker and shiny backsides, which doesn't work for the costume; the original had lighter and matte backside of the material. And you can see this in the skirt so I think it's worth paying attention to.

I ended up using real hide for mine. Yes, it's more expensive, but it's not *that* bad, not compared to what some other costumes cost making.

As for a pattern. Well, mine was patterned on me, (with a little help from friends), but basically you just need something with princess seams front and back for the bodice. I choose a side zipper, because as far as I can see there is no mid back seamline. But I know others have a back zipper and that the hair will pretty much hide it.

I hope that is helpful to you. Smile
