I bought the fabric today, but I'm afraid of messing up when I start cutting.

The fabric looks gorgeous! If you haven't done it already, I suggest doing a practice mock-up in muslin or an old bed sheet to make sure you love your pattern and that it fits well.

Microsuede has a little bit of a nap. If you brush your hand up and down it you will see that it looks different when you turn it around. So, you want to make sure that all of your pattern pieces are pointed the same direction. No putting one skirt piece up-side-down to make it fit better, or the color will look off when it all goes together.

Another trick for making sure that your patterns are all lined up, if you are using commercial patterns is to look for the grain line, usually up and down the middle of the piece, and measure the distance between that line and the edge of your fabric, to make sure it is the same distance all the way down the pattern piece.

Have courage! Your costume will be beautiful!

That fabric in particular has a smooth, satin-like back, so I know the bodice can't be really tight because I don't want the seams to burst with my constant weight changes.

I also have a pair of sandals that might look good, but I'm planning to get the Hermes lyrical sandals because they look better than gladiator sandals.

Good luck! I'm slowly getting there with my own Ewok Village costume so I understand the fear of messing up. I spend a long time tweaking my mock-up before using it as my pattern.

Maybe you could start with something less intimidating? I found the long sleeved shirt was less scary and the braid was a nice evening project. Smile

That's a good idea. I'll start with the braid.

Good luck. Smile I just posted my progress in my own thread if you're looking for inspiration or just want to see how it's going for others making the same costume.

Thanks for the advice, Jenna and Lora!
My friend Dianne (stardancer1914) told me about the nap and how careful I have to be when placing the pattern pieces from my mockup. Because right now I don't have time to start building the costume (probably I will in 2 weeks), I started with something easier. I'm still working on it, but not so bad for a start

To my surprise, this photo reached 99 Likes on Facebook in 3 days, which is proof of how popular this costume is.

Your hair looks great! What a great start. I look forward to seeing more. This costume really is iconic.

Thanks Jenna! My friends said they're looking forward to seeing this costume complete because they want to see my hair like this.

My hair is naturally wavy/curly, so all I have to do is wash it, douse it in treatments and brush the ends a little to get the look. And it's so long now that I might just wait a bit so the ends are as long as the braid.

Good place to start. Smile

I take it that was just a test wrapping? Otherwise you need to redo the wrapping, because it's uneven right now. But the braid looks great with you hair.

Yes Lora, that was a test wrapping. I did it better (tighter per the advice of a friend) and it came out a lot better. But there's still room for improvement.

Next will be the sleeves. They seem easy but I need time and energy.

I wrapped mine pretty tightly to get a nice even look. I've got a pic of it somewhere in my WIP thread (page three, I think). You can look here if you want to take a look at my braid: http://www.forum.rebellegion.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=45022

Once you're satisfied with the braid, do share a pic with us. Smile
