This is my long term project due to cost and the compiling of various parts.
I managed to get a lovely helmet from Todd out of SoCal and am using this thread over at TDH to aid me in construction and painting.
http://www.thedentedhelmet.com/showthread.php?t=52474
I have already procured a light kit from Fettronics for the top visor as well.
Since I shelved this project while I was working on Bespin, I haven't gotten very far with the helmet. The visors are cut out, ear greeblies attached and I'm in a sanding/priming phase. Priming and painting is slow going as springtime in Colorado is very unpredictable with the temperatures and humidity levels.
This is about where I had to stop the helmet work..
I'm so pleased at the cheek scratches. I was nervous as heck working with the dremel to apply damage to the resin!
I started to use bondo to smooth out and fill places, but did not like working with it and when dried, bondo just was not giving the look I wanted. So I switched to Tamiya model putty. I quite like that much better!
I haven't decided yet on whether I want to tackle making the soft goods myself or commissioning the tunics and pants. It all depends if my sewing machine can handle leather or not. I already have vendors in mind for the bandolier and boot disks. Sourcing the tank and shoulder armor has been tricky, so I have some folks I can hit up locally to help sculpt and create from scratch.
Anywho, here's the start of my WIP thread here! I hope to resume sanding/priming and start the painting soon when the weather decides to cooperate! _________________ Alpha 75 - "No Instructions? No problem!"

Very nice, can't wait to see everything progress!
The helmet is always a good place to start, as it has so much detail. (I still need to order my helmet kit lol.)
Best of luck on this build!! |

Thank you and DO IT. This helmet kit is gorgeous.
I also learned when working with this resin helmet... dust mask and eye protection are needed.... and don't wear a black shirt. LOL _________________ Alpha 75 - "No Instructions? No problem!"

It's a great start.
And my cheap sewing machine had no trouble handling the pig skin for my Ewok Village gown, so I doubt yours would have problems. _________________

Since I've noticed a lot of WIPs I'm finding skip the base layer on these parts, here we go!
I drilled a few airholes into the snout greeblie this morning as there will be an intake fan behind this piece.
I went with gun metal as aluminum is just too light. Depth and shading will come out later when I weather.
The range finder, ear caps and center bit on the snout, painted black. I purposefully missed some spots on the range finder as those will need to be painted the German grey.

I dremeled out a bit more on the lower visor slit since I hadn't shaved off enough of the resin. I went back as far as I was comfy with. I also added a ventilation hole in the snout so I can put an intake fan there.
I touched up the dent scratches as I deepened the dent a but sanded it smooth, so... had to scratch that baby up again!
Looking at boots... I was going to go with ankle boots as I have trouble fitting boots over my calves. I do so much walking/hiking that I don't have calves anymore, I have steers.
The two ankle booties I found were a bit too dark in color, but workable. I kept looking. I found THESE.
https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01MG4R5IF/ref=twister_B01MCXY34B?_encoding=UTF8&th=1&psc=1
They're flat, the color is good, worst case scenario I have to slit up the back and install gussets. No biggie as they won't be seen under the spats anyway. That leaves the remaining concern.
Sole color.
This is not specified in either 501st or RL CRL, however, going off reference photos, they're too dark. Minor issue, as they can be painted!
Unless there's a glaring issue I have missed, I think I'm going to go with these! _________________ Alpha 75 - "No Instructions? No problem!"

Thanks!!
I have some of the dark brown microsuede purchased for the inner tunic and girth belt. I'm aiming to get my airbrush and compressor this week too so I can start painting. In between drying layers, work on some soft goods. _________________ Alpha 75 - "No Instructions? No problem!"

This is looking great so far. Thanks so much for documenting all of your progress. We don't have very many Boushh build threads for other people to learn from, so I'm sure this will be a big help to other people later on. _________________

That's why I'm doing it
I've been finding tutorials galore over at The Dented Helmet, but not here. But I know not everyone knows to go look there.
Speaking of...
This is the thread that boosted my confidence in being able to do this build and am relying heavily on it for step by step instructions. The step by step photos really helped me as a visual person to go 'OH HEY, that's not as complicated as I was making it out to be in my head!"
Plus, Alvo used a great india ink bath method for weathering the cape and outer tunic which I cannot wait to try.
http://www.thedentedhelmet.com/showthread.php?t=55846
And I'll be basing my helmet painting off this thread:
http://www.thedentedhelmet.com/showthread.php?t=52474
This weekend I will be starting my painting on the helmet and hopefully getting to measure out what width of the cummerbund/girth belt will look best on my torso so I can measure out what size piping to get.
For the gauntlets, I purchased from Studs and Spikes:
http://www.studsandspikes.com/spike-tree-1-2-size-13silver.html
I may reinforce them against the suede with leftover leather, or using thin plastic like I saw in The MadSeamstress's WIP over on the Bounty Hunter Guild detachment. Both are excellent ideas.
OH and some weathering progress on the greeblies. I need to take an updated photo as I got the aluminum too saturated in spots so muted it with a dry brush of black.

Away with go with the layers!
This is a mix of brown/black, typically 60/40.
After that was a layer of the flat brown. Next up, a layer of reddish brown over that.
Taking a bit of a break before I start back with some hand painting of some details! _________________ Alpha 75 - "No Instructions? No problem!"

Pardon the artificial lighting. I didn't take a photo until it was dark out and had the living room lights on.
But seeing the helmet via photo and different lighting types is helping me in the painting process. The base layers are still definitely very dark brown.
Anyway... for my first time ever doing weathering like this, I think I'm doing okay. I'm now onto the paint chip effect using the tamiya red brown/white 60/40 mix.
After trooping in Denver today, hubby and I stopped by Ikea, I had a sad. I wanted to buy the Gurli throw in beige as it's the right color and weave for the cape, alas... Sold out. I'll keep an eye out to see if it comes back in stock, or I'll work on the cape using burlap or similar course fabric.
I'm trying to stay focused on the helmet for right now. Next weekend, I may move on to misting the sky grey and german grey onto the helmet.
I've never used an airbrush until this weekend, AND I LOVE IT. _________________ Alpha 75 - "No Instructions? No problem!"

Keep posting your progress. It's very nice to see it all.
And maybe IKEA will get the fabric back in stock soon. Watch their website? _________________
