Some general trooping information for EVERYONE trooping the Albuquerque International Balloon Fiesta. There is a lot of info so please read it all.

GENERAL INFORMATION

•This is a high profile event with lots of photo-ops and media. The AIBF is recognized as the most photographed events in the world. Everybody has a camera and you will be in hundreds of pictures. In addition, local and national media are present.

•We will have fair but not unlimited number of entry passes and parking permits. We will issue them for each event and collect them before we leave so we have them for the next event. Be prepared to carpool and/or pitch in to pay for parking.

•We will meet at the west end of the Target parking lot at Paseo del Norte and I-25, consolidate people and bins into as few vehicles as possible and car pool onto the Balloon Fiesta grounds. *** PLEASE DOUBLE CHECK TIMES THE NIGHT BEFORE A TROOP- TIMES CHANGE- YOU MUST BE FLEXIBLE ***

•As such, space will be at a premium. If you have a smaller travel bin, please bring it instead of your large bin. We usually try to have a variety of vehicles including trucks, etc. so you might not actually be in the same vehicle with your bin.

TROOPER INFORMATION

This is a CANON/FORMAL TROOP. Rebel Legion or 501st Legion Active Approved Costumes ONLY. If you sign up to troop on the Rebel Forums, you MUST troop in your approved Rebel costume.

*** One of each face character per TROOP- first signed up gets to troop*** The ONLY two exceptions to the face character rule are Leia/Boushh and Young/Old Kenobi.

•No blasters, guns, props, etc. Light Sabers for Vader/Jedi are ok. The AIBF is strict about this so TAKE YOUR BLASTERS OUT OF YOUR BINS before you come to the Fiesta. You don't want to accidentally put it on out of habit.

•For the morning troops, we will be changing in the Balloon Fiesta parking lot before dawn. Expect it to be cold and dark. Plan on bringing your winter UnderArmor (or two sets of regular weight). A flashlight or camping lantern in your bin might help.

•On the other hand, the evening troops can be warm so be ready to be flexible. While we dress while it's still light out, we will be undressing after dark so again the lanterns and flashlights are helpful.

•There is an individual trooping thread for morning and evening events and will have details for meeting time and place.

•When we are moving from one point to another (like parking lot to the field) we will not stop for pictures. Politely tell them to come to the field. If we stop for one picture, many more will follow.

•Vader / Chewbacca Trooping: Things change when we have a Vader/ Chewbacca/ high profile face characters in the mix...
We will need at least two assertive and patient handlers for EACH high profile character. They will be stationed with their back to the balloon trailer or something else. One handler will stay right with the character while the other manages the line and cues the next excited fan for a picture. Once the line is established, it goes pretty well. All high profile characters need prior approval from Base Command to ensure we can plan for enough handlers.

I know this seems like a lot of info but this is a huge event and we want you to be as prepared as possible.

As we are coordinating our troops with the Dewback Ridge Garrison-Please be sure to post which troops you're planning on attending so we'll have a rough estimate of the number of troopers and handlers for each event!

A few more Fiesta Reminders -

Costume Reverence:
-when trooping do so respectfully & professionally... remember you're the character you're portraying!

-Mind your manners-remember please & thank you & watch your language.

-If you're wearing a helmet/mask, leave it on unless you're experiencing an emergency- THEN GET A HANDLER

-Weapons: light sabers ONLY! NO EXCEPTIONS! No arrest poses, no stabbing poses.

Parking & Trooping:
- Meet & Departure times are posted on the troop threads-please don't be late, the caravan will not wait.

-Expect to pitch in for parking. We only have 6 passes & that just won't cover the 40-60 people we have Trooping on the weekends. You are welcome to take your own vehicle and pay the $15 for daily parking or carpool & pitch in to share parking expense.

-Consolidate your bin as much as possible to conserve space.

Handlers:
- There will be a Head Handler at each troop. This person will conduct daily briefings to remind people of ettiquet, get trooper & handler head counts, & assign handlers to face characters like Vader, Chewie, & Ahsoka.

-When the handlers give the signal to go, we are going. Period.

Galactic Academy:
- If you bring your kid with you to the troop, you are responsible for your kid. Meaning, each kid in costume must have a handler & that handler is the parent or guardian. We will not be assigning handlers to your children.

-Know your kid's limits! These troops average 3 hours each. Please be prepared.

Weather:
- We can't control it. We are at the mercy of the weather and the balloons. Please be patient and flexible.

This is for Handlers that are Legion members or otherwise. Please pass this info along to all handlers. They are crucial for smooth trooping!

Handlers are vital to us at this event due to pre-dawn darkness and lens fogging combined with huge crowds. A handler will need to lead us in and out and everywhere. So we need some really good handlers.

We will need and try to have handlers especially for the weekend mornings and all evening events. We've had a few little incidents with unruly folks. If we are short on handlers, we will need to work in pairs and watch out for each other. Handlers will have a handler badge and hopefully be wearing a Star Wars shirt of sorts.

Please, let's try to have experienced handlers (usually not a problem). Inexperienced handlers at the very least should not be leading troopers. It can be an overwhelming experience for newbies.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Handler Guidelines

Handlers are a critical part of a successful troop. As such, we're requesting you contribute your best efforts in your duties. As a handler, you represent Bantha Canyon Base and Dewback Ridge Garrison. We ask that you follow all applicable guidelines and expectations.

HANDLER'S CODE OF CONDUCT

To provide costumed members a courteous and prompt aid in costume changes, malfunctions, etc.
To offer costumed members assistance in traveling to and from trooping positions, as necessary.
To represent both Bantha Canyon Base and Dewback Ridge Garrison in a courteous, positive, polite and congenial manner to the public.

HANDLER'S RESPONSIBILITIES

Handlers should check in with a member of the Command Staff upon arrival.

If a member of command is not available, Handlers should find the Lead Handler contact.

If available, handlers will be given something (badge, shirt, vest, etc) that will identify them to the public as being part of our group. Please return this item at the end of the troop.

A Handler's primary responsibility is to watch the backs of all troopers.

Having 1 Handler per 2-3 troopers is a good rule of thumb.

HANDLER'S DUTIES

Keep an attentive eye on all troopers, especially the ones closest to you.

Help answer questions from the public, but please defer questions to troopers if you don't know an answer.

Keep an attentive eye on all troopers, especially the ones closest to you.

Guide troopers to and from appointed areas

Handlers should be prepared to help run errands...ie posting fliers, setting up tables, breaking down tables, checking in with troopers stationed at trooping duties.

Handlers should be willing to offer to take pictures for the public.

Handlers should remain with a group of troopers/particularly high profile face characters. Certain characters will need special attention and a handler may be assigned directly to that character to provide crowd control and help with pictures.

Keep an attentive eye on all troopers, especially the ones closest to you.
