|
|
|
I just picked up Hasbro Black Series Poe's helmet during the midnight release for Force Friday II and decided to disassemble to get some details more accurate and repaint into Jess Pava's helmet.
I really love the helmet so far especially the fact that it isn't too heavy. The overall looks are pretty accurate to the one in TLJ except some of the parts that were modified to be more suitable to be in a toy form.
I was happy to see that almost all of the parts could be disassembled without prying off. Only the few of the detail parts were glued on and most of them were screwed in so everything came apart without applying any force to it.
More pictures and progress coming soon... |

Filled out the indent for removable ear and switch hole.
Removed the "buckle" and reattached it by chopping it up since it was attached too deep and hardly protruded. (Not yet painted in picture)
Primed and base color painted....
Here, you can see where I flunked so hard by using ACETONE to strip rained-on-paint on ABS. I stopped thinking when I saw ruined paint surface and melted plastic in the end. I had to wait till it dried and sanded to get the smooth surface back.
Basic colors are applied and major scratches were made. I realized that I got the gray wrong so I had to go over with some white wash.

It's not pictured in the first post but the sides of the helmet also come apart with a bit of force applied to them. It is so much easier to have it separate when painting them. |

So is there a filler piece behind it now to raise it up? If so what did you use? |

There is none but some CA glue. It had a 'base' that I had to remove and it had some good thickness so I applied good amount of glue on there and stuck them in. It is cut to be the exact size of the holes so it is quite secure without any room. I have put some extra glue on the back just to be more secure but I'm sure it should be enough to hold them in place. |

Painted(not weathered) buckles are now attached to the helmet.
Made vector images of the symbols and Aurebesh letterings and laser printed(professional grade. It was expensive but worth it!) them out on the water slide decal paper. It worked really well.
It definitely seemed like they were using water slide decals for the prop helmets since the transparent backing(boundaries) of the decals and the sheen was visible in some photos.
The decal was surprisingly thin and sturdy which I didn't really expect from these cheap ones from Amazon.
I might make a small run of these decals with the leftover papers if I have some time to make vectors of other characters' markings. Or maybe take commissions for custom ones... |

Covered the rubber lining thing with black cloth to give the TFA helmet look.
Polished the lense and reassembled almost everything and....
It's almost done! I need to rewire the back speaker since I accidentally tore it out but everything else are in place.
Even the switch got moved inside too! |

What black material did you use, and how did you attach it? |
