I have jumped into building a Chewie. I do a Deathtrooper in the 501st. Not a lot of Chewies around and it's one that the everyone loves, so I'm doing the build.

So far I've got my mesh suit sewn, my feet are in progress, and I started latch hooking yesterday and have made good progress (photos to come soon). Once I figured out how to use the tool effectively, I can do a row across the shirt in about 5-10 min.

I'm 6'0" so my lifts are 11". Not sure I'm entirely satisfied with them, but they aren't done yet. My goal is 7'2" with the mask.

A buddy in NoVa is also building one so we are dividing some of the work. He's scuplting the mask. I'll be scuplting the toes.

I'll be showing WIP and will be happy to answer any questions about what I've learned as I go along.

Welcome to the Wookiee world.

A good place to start are the two links you'll find in my signature: my old Chewbacca Costuming Resources page, which is good but about 10 years out of date.

I am in the midst of finishing up an updated version which you can see here at Wookiee Builder's Club. Should be up and running January or so.

After a bit of a learning curve, I've gotten faster at latch hooking and can do about 24 square inches per hour.

So, it kind of looks like a funky hula skirt right now. This is 4 hours worth of work.

So, you noticed I had a mini-bacca! He will be 15 years old in March. He may not make it to see it completed.

I created a site to document the build. I'll still be posting here, but will probably be putting more content on the build site.

I have gotten a lot of latch hooking completed! I'm nearly complete with one arm.

Go to the website for all the updates.

I have completed the blonde on the right arm. Haven't done the fill-in on the left yet.

Looking good Roger.

Watching your YT vid, which I love, are you using shoulder pads to bulk out the top? Also, when it comes time to do your shoulders and armpits, try and get almost every hole filled with hair - it's a pain in the backside and time consuming but as you're lifting your arms A LOT lol, you really shouldn't be able to see any mesh in those parts.

Once you've got all the hair on and you give the kit a good brush and trim the hair, you'll see a massive difference (hair and tumbleweeds everywhere lol!) but glad to see you just getting the hair on the kit and ploughing through it.

Plenty of time for that later. Go hard mate!

Yes, I am going to use shoulder pads to bulk out the top. It currently hangs like I'm wearing a football jersey for an NFL lineman. I made it that way on purpose so that I could use shoulder pads to make me look better proportioned.

The shoulders are getting every hole latched. As I move off the peak, I transition to skipping holes to reduce bulk. Doing the same thing on the arms.

It's pretty much just a matter of grinding through the latching. I found hanging the suit made latching much quicker than trying to use an embroidery hoop.
