Mission Report:
We’d all arrived by around 8.45am, meeting at the very tempting bake stall to await direction from hospital staff. After being shown to our dressing room, we had about 15 minutes to kit up (huge thanks to first time wrangler Lauren who did a wonderful job helping us all!).
We made our way to the courtyard’s red carpet where greeted the children, their families and very excited staff as they made their way outside from the wards.
It was a surprisingly hot day, particularly in the full force of the sun, which is where we found ourselves waiting, and waiting, for the live cross to Channel Seven’s Morning Show. But Lauren kept us hydrated with bottled water and, as Sarah said, it’s all for the children.
Our TV duties fulfilled, we moved along to the undercover foyer. We happened to stand right next to the petting zoo, leading to an adorable moment between Chewie and a baby goat.
Everyone was having so much fun; there were huge smiles, fist bumps and high-fives aplenty. I only saw two kids cry the sight of Chewie and Darth Vader. I think some of the adults were more freaked out.
After 2.5 hours in kit, we headed back to the dressing room, while a Stormtrooper visited the children who remained in the wards.
Afterwards, the hospital treated us to burgers for lunch which we enjoyed while watching the talented School of Rock stage show performers.
It was an incredibly rewarding experience, one that I was honoured to be part of.
Mission Status:
The event was a huge success, with just over $4 million raised for the hospital and its services for patients and their families.
