WOW! Makes me want to start making this costume. But others need to be finished first and it is too hot most of the year here.
Awesome, awesome, awesome pictures. _________________

Johan and Tapio!!! Thank you so much! I'm currently working on two commissioned Hoth hats and I was staring at the movie because I wasn't satisfied with the way the pattern that Phyllis had commissioned by Kathy (hat lady!) had done the "tabs" for the goggle strap. I came to the conclusion that there were two larger tabs closest to the cheeks and three in the back, and I was right. But WOW, I love the detail, I never knew that about the velcro closures. These two hats will be the most accurate that I've made yet! Thanks so much!!! _________________ ~Mieal |

Thanks a ton for the photos, guys! They'll be extremely useful for our project of making grey RFT hats based on the Hoth ones. _________________

here are a few of my photos..
Enjoy...
Here is a pic of the mouth peice Johan is talking about
It's got the basic shape of your regular filtermask
the elastic was totally worn out and had to be kept in place by hand. It should have gone under the "flaps" on the sides along with the googles but i forgot to place them there when i put it on.
One happy trooper..
Some detail shoots...

That face mask is certainly interesting..
I have seen it in use in a "behind the scenes" photo..
but I don't think I actually saw it used during filming?
I am guessing here that maybe those masks were maybe originally intended to be used as something to keep the actors a little more comfortable during filming...
or were proposed to be used during filming ...but "dropped"?
And...Rachel had pointed out that the Hoth Jackets (well...Luke's did for sure) also had a hood that went up...then the hat was put on over the hood....
aside from a photo taken at DAG...that feature was also not a well known feature... _________________

This is an excellent resource, thank you!
I thought I'd point something out...

This is what is called bias! Same with the binding around the edges of the soft hat. Twill is ridged diagonally, and since the ridging here is horizontal, it tells me this is bias, which is what would be proper to use there anyway. It stretches, so it will go around curves, where ribbon will not. Bias is easy enough to make out of your fabric, you will cut strips at a 45 degree angle, which is on the diagonal of your fabric. For this, I would get 1 1/4" or 1 1/2" strips will do. And, to get the proper ridge detail, you won't follow the diagonal of the ridges in the twill, you will go the opposite way. _________________

Yes I know. I have done that myself. Before I saw the hat, I had a theory that they had used some kind of ready-made bias tape. |
