Don't forget the greeblie.... Aka, a black plastic 1" buckle (both halves snapped together), attached vertically at the top, an inch or 2 outside the center seam.

Guess I never realized they weren't a requirement.....
Anyway, from the new Original Trilogy Costumes book:

A-wing pilot:

B- and Y-wing pilots:

Looks like a parachute style buckle. I wonder how it's attached, there's no fabric going through the slots.

I need to make my straps wider, too.

But, it doesn't change the basic directions on how to sew the thing together.

It looks to me like the buckles are sewn on with a small piece of black webbing. If you look closely it looks like there's webbing looped around the top slot and then goes down behind the buckle. I can't tell if there's any around the bottom of the buckle or if it's just around the top.

That would work. Sew it down so that the webbing is underneath the buckle. Then the bottom could be sewn down and it's hidden beneath the horizontal strap.

I'm thinking those straps are about 2" wide. So cut it 3", and fold under 1/2" on each raw edge.

I'm almost wondering if those gaiters are made out of leather. The material is really thick, whatever it is, and the top edges of the gaiters look frayed like the exposed edge a leather piece. Though the straps don't have that frayed edge so... Hmmm...

That much leather would be fairly expensive, too.

I was thinking canvas. Or really heavy duck, or twill with interfacing to stiffen it up.

Could be. The material just looks so thick. And it doesn't look to have any sort of weave to it.

I used vinyl for my gaiters. It actually looks pretty close, though it's thinner.

I made ours out of double-layer khaki canvas. Ended up making them nice and stiff. I stitched the buckles flat to the legging with just heavy black thread wrapped around it a few times.... But i like the small piece of webbing idea too, you just have to tack the bottom down so it doesn't flop around.

I have to gloat a bit: when I made our sets for Massiff Squadron (Mos Espa Base), I went off the grainy photos of course that existed at the time. I was like "those legging greeblies look like 1" black buckles... I'll just use them for now until we ever get official confirmation." Turns out I was accidentally spot-on Smile
