Here are some pictures of my dress from Comicon

Sadly, the belt didn't resist the high levels of activity and I have to redo. I'm thinking about getting sheet metal and tin snips instead of the aluminum sheets and rivet the new plates to the belt ibstead of gluing (not even E-6000 kept them together). My base officers said it looked really good and with the details finished should be approved.

A trick I used for my belt was to use a bobby pin through the shank of the button. Layer the plate on top of the leather, then put the button through the plate and the leather and secure it with a bobby pin. It holds very well. I can post a pic when I get home tonight how I did it.

I did the same thing with picture hanging wire, and tied it off on the inside of the belt. My belt was 2 layers of pleather sewn together with the knot in the middle, so you don't rub anything against yor dress.

I glued the buttons to the aluminum plates, but I have to remove them because the aluminum is flimsy.

I use heavy aluminum sheeting from Home Depot for my belts, but if you want to glue them it's a bit of a process, since the oxidation on the surface of the aluminum is very, very adhesive resistant.

The way to avoid that is to sand down the backs of the plates (I use a dremel, but anything that scratches up the surface of the metal will work). I then coat the plate in a thin layer of Weldbond glue and place it on the belt, with something heavy to hold it down.

The button covers are attached with silicone glue, the one glue that seems to be able to bond to aluminum. I just put a nice lump inside the button cover, and then put it where I want on the plate. Allowed to cure for three hours, those suckers aren't going anywhere.

You could probably also use silicone glue for everything, but silicone glue is expensive and there are other ways of managing.

Hope that helps!

Thanks for sharing your pictures! Looks like a fun convention. Good luck with our belt. Keep us posted on it.

Raychel, it was an amazing convention! I had a blast with that costume and a lot of parents are more willing to let their kids have a picture with Classic Leia than Slave Leia.

Update on the belt:

I bought sheet metal cards from Joann, but they were a very specific size and although they worked great for my octagonal plates, the pentagonal center plate came out a bit narrow. No big deal.

I decided to rivet the plates to the vinyl instead of gluing, and everything else was just as I did the first time.

Belt is a lot sturdier now, perfect for "high-impact" troops. The image is a Before and After.

I'm thinking about buying the Kalisa boots from Shiekh Shoes, but they don't have a size 8 now. I can do a 7.5 in some shoe brands, but I'm afraid the 7.5 runs too small. I wore Halloween gogo boots that don't meet the standards and are super uncomfortable; they destroyed my feet at Comicon. But I'm going to hit the thrift stores before buying online and hopefully I'll find a pair of white flat boots.

That looks great! Can't wait to see how it goes! I've made a few ANH Leias now and they can be a nice and easierish costume to make and people love it!
