I'm thinking when I get some nice leather stripping for the lacing on the dress chest area, I'll use it on the sandals around the base to hide where I've had the straps sewn in. Going to make the braid headband today.

That sounds like a good idea. It will finish off the edges nicely, I think.

I have not attached them yet as I have to get some cheap plastic clamps to keep them on the band while the glue dries. Also, my image was taken prior to the matte finish clear coat I used to smooth down the stray hairs that make a braid look crappy. I also had cut the ends so they look a bit more natural and not like a balled up rats nest at the end of a braid. When it's completely affixed to the band, I'll snap another image.

And the zipper is installed in the back as well. All that is left is to burn the holes in the top portion, thread the lacing, tack on the top skirt and fabric belt. Then I will take some pictures and submit this. It turned out quite nice really.

Wanted to share the latest image from the upper portion of the dress. I'm going to use sticky back velcro (dots) for the inner sleeves to attach to the dress sleeves, and a 3/4" x 24" piece for the belt to keep it in place without stitching in on. That will allow for the zipper to function right, I think. I've got the outer skirt ready to tack on, but am waiting until this Saturday to do so. There is a small group of 501st legion that will be at a comic book store locally, and one of them said she would bring her dress for me to compare with my own.

So far, so good. The skirt is definitely the tricky part.

I know it's been a while, but I think I'll be ready to submit pictures of the costume on Monday. Granted, it's a holiday and I've no doubt it'll wait until later to be looked into, but it's the first day I have my "photographer" available (my husband). Time to take the plunge, eh?

Anyhow, just to bring it all up to date:
I've redone the braid hairband as the braids were just too thick. The new one is almost identical, but more realistic on my head.

Sandals are completed.

Dress has had all nips & tucks to make it fit right.

Thanks to everyone who has helped me out! When I get the Zam Wesell project completed this summer, I'm going to rework this dress in suede leather.

Yes. And I do apologize for how long this drug out. Much of what's been holding me back was out of my control. I'd get tons done, then have to stop for a bit. *sigh*

I'll get the submission done (hopefully asap), and then I'll have to wait a week for the update as I have to fly to Washington state for a funeral.

Sorry to hear about that. Take your time; we won't be going anywhere and you should submit when you have the time for it.

I have to reshoot the front image again this evening. The ones taken this morning weren't very good. Otherwise, I have all the rest ready to upload.

I placed an order for some suede leather from Tandy. Since I didn't like the tan colors they currently have in stock, I bought ivory/white and a bottle of water based tan dye. My airbrushing technique worked out well for a Zam costume I'm building right now, so I'm going to lightly dye this suede before I cut and sew it. The differences between the two materials I've worked with on the Leia dress should be interesting. I will probably actually get to it this late summer or fall.

If anyone is interested, the photobucket site referred to above also has several of the Zam Wesell WIP. I purposely mottled the skins for that one, though I won't be doing that with the Leia costume.

Good luck when you get started on the suede dress. Smile I bought undyed pig skin for my dress, which was perfect in color.
