Hi,
Always wanting to improve my build and being slightly obsessive about accuracy, I've been contemplation a mk 3 mask with a complete new sculpt and cast.

Here are some pics..starting off with a base.

Then onto shaping and detail.

I did some comps against the screen used mask in photoshop. This was making sure i'm on the right track for sizing and placement.

Thanks for the compliments ...

There is a video to post up and then I'll post up the processes of the mask build
Hopefully it will be ready for the premier of episode 7.

I like the sculpt! I need to learn to do this some day... I can't wrap my head around how you get a skull and a skin from this still, even though I've read 3 build threads on it. Smile

I like the muzzle. I feel like most sculpts understate the length/narrowness of Chewy's muzzle under all of that hair. Yours looks about perfect!

...so The next stage is to cast the face sculpt. First is a beauty coat made from 50 percent bondo and 50 percent resin. This is mixed up and is called a gelcoat. The gelcoat has a hardening agent added then brushed on. Once cured another layer is added.

Then i added some foil tape around the border for the flange.

The next part is fibreglassing over the top of the gelcoat for rigidity.

Three layers of fibreglass were used and then some more gelcoat around the flange to ensure no cracks later on in the process.

- - - Updated - - -

After a week, the fibreglass mould was stripped off the baseboard and then the clay sculpt was dug out of the fiberglass shell.

This is looking into the shell to see the impression made by the (removed) clay

shadows are making the second pic look weird

Then a thin layer of clay is added back into the area that later be silicone. The thickness of the clay pressed in will determine the thickness of the silicone alliance .

After the inner fibreglass shell was made, the they were separated to reveal the inner core of clay. This is removed leaving a void for the silicone.

removing the clay

I didn't fancy going through the hassle of doing the injection method for the silicone, so i made the mix up and added it to the beauty shell, added the inner shell and gripped them together.

as i could see through the mould i could tell that there was not enough silicone mix. I separated the moulds and added more silicone, clamped them back again. You can see the darker patch has progressed further up and out.

(the stringy bits are from the bleed holes)
then out came the silicone appliance after separating the moulds...

I'm enjoying watching your progress. I've already started on mask #5 (and sculpt #3) so I know the feeling. Enjoy!
