I was just doing some research here before I start on the jacket. I made a few notes on my computer and as I was moving the files around, I noticed that I titled one 'Hoth Pockets'.

I am going to be making some hoth pockets! Laughing

I found this in one of the other build threads here in this forum:

This Butterick pattern may have the best choice to base my idea for making the boots: B5233

http://butterick.mccall.com/b5233-products-7495.php?page_id=916

BTW, Butterick patterns will be on sale at JoAnne next weekend

This is the view that I was most interested in:

Just make the top taller.

SO, what color are these?

I saw some heather grey wool felt that could make an awesome Hoth boot/moccasin. Would heather grey be acceptable for HRT?

Awesome find Kathy!!!

For the Trench Troopers the boots are actually a gaiter that covers a "real" boot....

one of the reference photos at the Yahoo group shows one of the troopers where his gaiter is coming apart from his boot underneath....

the color has been decided as tan...

Are the boots / gaiters / Hoth footwear shown here in these pictures the same as what the HTT's wear? And if so, could they be grey? (not tan)
.

That picture in the book is supposed to be Luke...
his costume was different from the Norwegian Ski Patrol guys that were used for the Hoth Trench Troopers in Finsk

as to gray vs tan...
...don't even go there...

Laughing

I will post a photo later when I can get photobucket to co-operate

Thanks Phyllis! Bid Placed! Smile

RE: Gaiters

AH! I see!

They probably couldn't afford to outfit all of the extras in the movie with real boots, so they game up with those!

Well, the 60% Off one cut of reg. priced fabric coupon at JoAnne is valid next weekend, so I will have a week to think about it while I work on other pieces. And Butterick patterns will be $1.99 as well then.

BTW = JoAnne has all of their storage containers at 50% off now, so I picked up 2 of them yesterday. I think they are the right size!

either that or
since the Actors/extras/Ski Patrol that were out there in the cold for those scenes were out there for probably hours and hours...
those boots under the gaiters were probably necessary to avoid a whole bunch of guys with frostbite on their feet..
Weather in Finsk during filming of those scenes was the worst on record at that time...

Very Happy

I need to make a run to Joanne's too...

RE: Gaiters. Perhaps I will make them sort of like I made my Tusken "shoes" (Where I built 'boots' out of canvas fabric that fit exactly over my regular Docs)

So what material do you use for lenses? Where do you get this material?
The plastic seems fairly thin and is pretty easy to remove.

Something like this to mask it with

http://www.ebay.com/itm/12-x12-Gloss-Golden-Yellow-Fog-Light-Tint-Headlight-Taillight-Tint-Vinyl-Film-/321203359015?pt=Motors_Car_Truck_Parts_Accessories&hash=item4ac9364d27&vxp=mtr

try an auto shop

I am going to do this for now and be looking for some flexible plastic the right color to cut a new lens out of

Thanks Phyllis! Very Happy

I am getting started on the HTT vest / packpack carrier.

I am looking at the files here:

http://movies.groups.yahoo.com/group/icestationecho/files/

The image of the 'Hoth Trench Trooper Vest / Backpack Carrier' file does indeed open to reveal the pattern piece.

http://f1.grp.yahoofs.com/v1/CPzkUkSZFRqQkLYyd0uTwCmnixmWudE5jzWqvF7AAMQlEaGWC6U9bJQ5fKD_20OtFhkS2sdx4e86gqyvs_nhpiyqAYAfYSn6UvclzvtiJDWu-9AKS1YuweIG5ns/Hoth%20Trench%20Trooper%20Vest%2C%20backpack%20carrier.PDF

However,

Most of the other files in the yahoo group are not working. In fact, they are opening as "Document Not Found"
I am signed in to the Yahoo group, Why aren't the files opening?

WOW. Now all of the files are opening as "Document Not Found" Sad

Yahoo Groups can sometimes experience weirdness.

I went into the Yahoo Group and the PDF's were all working as of now...

I downloaded the PDF and e-mailed it to you..

I started a whole new topic here on these forums about my build project:

http://www.rebellegion.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=54011

I will come back & refer to this thread a lot though!

Historical footwear pattern = PURCHASED + stuff to try to make gaiters!

Boyscout backpack frame = ARRIVED!

I will now try to post update pictures / news on the other thread! Smile

While looking through the topics in this forum for reference pictures, I noticed this one:

In one of the other threads, someone pointed out that in this photo, it appears that the front center (neck opening) of the jacket is NOT quilted.

I have been looking at this one for a while & thinking about how that could possibly be and / or what exactly are we seeing here??

I am now convinced that what we are seeing here in this photo is NOT the top of the jacket (behind the vest neck opening), but rather an other piece of fabric, which in this case is the scarf.

There is also an other very interesting thing that this picture shows: The center front (opening) of the vest.

I am convinced that this piece was a 'found object' actually a WWII era military life vest. The front opening of this vest DID indeed include a zipper. In this photo you can see that something was covered up by a narrow piece of fabric vertically down the front. I am convinced that this is hiding a zipper.

.....and now that makes a whole lot more sense.......
