So, as is obvious from my screen name, I'm a big fan of Phoenixes. So when Rebels put in Phoenix Squadron, I knew I wanted to do one of their A-wing pilots. I have no idea where to begin on some of it though. To start with, they seem to be different by male and female, they have red jumpsuits, and I don't know if I should try to go for a lesser detailed animated style, or use normal movie-style A-Wing parts in the correct configuration to match what they have on screen.
Here is the concept art for the characters:
Male:
Female (just to show the differences. Also, more of an X-wing look):
And just because there is art of them in a green suit:
Though there's also grey:
Kinda confusing. I like the helmets on the first picture though, so I guess I'll default that way. Still, the chestbox and things are very simplified, so I don't know if I should go for a simplified look, or use normal movie looking chestboxes, etc.
Oh, and apparently they use clone DC-17 hand blasters:
Thoughts? |

Sounds like an interesting costume. Good luck. I've been tempted to do this costume myself. I have two A-wing pilot helmets and I've been thinking of modifying one for the Rebels style.
As for the chestbox and such, you'll want to do the Rebels style, not the Return of the Jedi style. The details are significantly different from RotJ so you'd want to do Rebels style.
Also, now that I look at it, the female red pilot, it looks like they used some of Hera's model for it, at least for the legs. They're poofy like her model and have the same kind of ejection harness. Interesting. The pilot costumes seem to be evolving throughout the season. _________________

According to the small text on the pictures, the male pilot uses the TIE pilot model for the base, and the female uses Hera for the base. I think it may be a bit of a case of lazy animation.
The chest boxes seem to have the same markings, just the Rebels one is far less detailed, which makes sense for animation, but may not make as much sense for reality/making a costume.
Also, it appears that all 4 types of pilot are contemporaries. These all come from Season 2. So it looks like they can sortof wear what they want and fly an A-Wing. 3 different color suits, different configurations of helmet and suit, etc. Kinda muddles the costumes even more than the movies did. |

I remember when the images first came out last year around May, wanting to do the grey one.
Talking with PhoenixTrooper about these builds today has me tempted to again try my hand at it.
Am really trying to remember if I have seen a grey pilot in the show itself, yet, though. |

Interesting concept! I would love to see some good images of the Rebels chestbox. _________________ Todd (Toda) - RAID XO

I’m working with bulldog props to produce the chest boxes and helmet variants. _________________
