Finally starting my RoTJ Luke!

Will try to link photobucket, currently: fabrics for shirt and pants.
Fabric is cotton/Lycra twill (some stretch) black and a light grey cotton sateen type bib liner fabric.
May have a chance this weekend to upgrade that to some raw silk.

Will be prepping muslin mock ups first:
McCalls 9579 Shirt: From photos it appears that there is a 'cuff' line but no placket? Seam lined up with sleeve?
Bib bottom should be above the belt? Attached on both sides (with right top corner opening/fold over?)
Is there an extended placket on the right front of the shirt that is under the bib?
Do most folks add the under arm zipper, or does your shirt open in the front? How?
vogue 2730 Pants: my pattern has waistband and fly and riding seam; will add the tuxedo stripe.

TIA!!

Good luck with it. Smile We have many female Lukes and we can always use one more.

And yes, the bib does indeed ends above the belt.

ok my pattern mod skills are very poor; will start over with the McCalls Civil War Tunic!! Found it at my local JoAnn.
Will be using some of gulywhumpr hints too, looks like good info on his blog.

It's not all that difficult to modify the pattern. I am not a sewing expert or anything, but I do have above average skills. haha Let me know if you get stuck and I can try to explain what I did. You can take or leave any advice I have. Also, Vera (Campbell? I think) is an outstanding costumer on here. She can probably help much better than anything I have online. One of these days I need to learn to drape fabrics. I get jealous every time I see someone doing that for their costume.

I kept the front opening on mine, like a normal shirt, but only on the upper half. I put thin velcro on that opening to close it when I am wearing it and then I sewed the bib to the front of the shirt on the left side of the shirt from bottom to top and across the top of the bib up to where the shirt would open. So the bib became a giant flap. On the right side of the shirt I also sewed the lower section of the bib from the bottom of the shirt up to where the bib folds down. It's a little weird putting the shirt on as I have to wiggle through the bib/shirt opening by putting it on like a T-shirt, over my head, but it all straightens out like it should.

here are some photos that I took.

^^ the bib material has a 'nubbly' texture (technical term) Wink

^^ the vest is made from a 'wooly' raw silk.

^^ this pic of the belt pouch might help, if you're planning to make your own

(for reference, the belt strap is 2 inches)

hope this helps. cheers.

follow the line of the bib, on the left side of the pic (luke's right), as it extends down towards the belt.

you can see where the shirt closes at the front.

James,
1)looks like I need to alter the collar a bit, spread the opening and raise the height?
2) I note that you did not have a yoke on the back of your shirt; Judges: do I need to add that to the pattern? Not specifically called out in the standards but visible.

We'd like it, but won't hit you on the head for not having it.

Got the muslin done today, back yoke and collar are ok, but am trying different sleeves.
Will also lose the 'attached' peplum style length and adjust main body pieces.

Update: new sleeve is good and I've mocked up the bib; I think it's good - feedback appreciated. It is several inches above belt line.
Attaching the bib is the challenge with combo of fit and shirt entry. thinking I'll sew it on the bottom, and use snaps/velcro for upper attachment.

I think the bib should be a little wider on the bottom edge.

looking at the bib on the B&W photo I posted of Luke above,
the bottom edge of his bib seems to be about 4/5 x the width of the top edge.

yours looks closer to 2/3 or 1/2 ?

(this might be just a trick of the camera's perspective -- since the top edge is physically closer to the lens .. but in your photo, your bib looks very narrow along the bottom edge).

sigh, your right and I worried about that.
mine is closer to 1/2, sort of looked better on me?? but I'll redo the proportions. that bib is giving me fits on how to attach and allow for ease of on/off of the shirt. And also to have it looked all sewn down like in the photos above.
also afraid my lining is too dark a grey...
more drafting!
I have sewn the actual fabric shirt, will work on bib again.

It might also be a bit off kilter or it's just the angle of the photo.

If you haven't already looked maybe this gallery will be helpful to you:
