For the seventh consecutive year, the 501st and Rebel Legion have joined forces to fight pediatric cancer at the Penn State Panhellenic Dance Marathon (THON), a 46-hour no-sleeping, no sitting dance marathon that caps the students’ annual fundraising efforts to benefit the Four Diamonds Fund at Hershey Medical Center. (The Four Diamonds Fund goes to cover families’ expenses that are not covered by insurance, as well as groundbreaking research for a cure for pediatric cancer.)

Each year both Legions field troopers to mingle with the dancers, play with Four Diamonds Families and provide a chance for these kids to forget about their cancer for a while and just be kids. (Because any chance you get to cross sabers with Darth Vader is a good day!) This year we were invited to THON for an 8:40am-9:40am timeslot, and were given 35 floor passes to split between Garrison Carida and Ghost Base. Our rendezvous point this year was the McDonalds a few minutes’ down the road from the Bryce Jordan Center, and by 7:30am we were loaded up to carpool to the venue for our 7:40am entry time.

Upon arrival we were informed that though our floor time was scheduled for 8:40, we were free to head out to the floor earlier if we were ready—challenge accepted! We double-timed our suiting up and were on the floor a little after 8am. Which was a good thing, since time on the floor of THON really flies! We spent the next 90 minutes posing for pictures, getting shot by squirt guns, bouncing beach balls, participating in the official THON 2017 Line Dance, and generally having a blast with the dancers, support staff and families that were there. (Some of the THON vets did note that this year’s time slot seemed to be outside the normal attendance hours for families, as there were not nearly as many kids there this year compared to past events.) Nevertheless, it was still a fantastic morning.

At 9:40 we suited down and said our goodbyes to folks who had to head home, while the rest of the group headed over to Otto’s Pub and Brewery for an early lunch. As with any post-troop feed, it was great to catch up with old friends and make new ones too. Another great example of how charity events are the heartbeat of our Garrison and Base!

Thanks to the members of Ghost Base and Garrison Carida who made this such a special event for everyone involved:

Special thanks to our squires Den Dolansky, Bryan Bumpers, Gina Platzer and Don Bickel—there should be a special combat patch exclusively for THON squires!—and also thanks to Gina Platzer and Jess Linn, who effortlessly managed the signup threads across both boards (you guys ROCK!), and to Andrew Marzka (ROCK ON!) for pulling some strings to get Otto’s to accommodate us.

And oh yeah—THON 2017 raised a grand total of $10,045,478.44!

Can’t wait for next year!
