Event Name
Marin County Fair

Event Description
http://www.marinfair.org/2017
Comments: Amazingly, it's time for the Marin County Fair again. For new members, this is the longest running, and arguably our best attended event of the year (both in terms of the number of folk’s visits from fans as well as the number of GGG members attending.)

As usual, R2 Builders, the Central California Garrison, Madalorian Merks, and the Rebel Legion are invited to participate as well.

LATEST INFORMATION PLEASE MAKE SURE TO READ…….

One of the more common requests we get from the guests at the fair is: Can we have more than just one character on the floor at a time. To help us with this task, we ask that when signing up for the days you can attend (including Handlers/Photographers) please give the following information:

Name -

Character -

Shift (1 – 4 ) -

Please sign up for any or all the shift(s) and day(s) you can be there.

We would like to have at least three or more costume characters on the floor during each shift.

Shift one: 11 am to 1 pm

Shift two: 1 pm to 3 pm

Shift three: 3 pm to 5 pm

Shift four: 5 pm to 7 pm

(We are also hoping to have more than one Vader/ Bounty Hunter/ Jawa each day thus helping to ensure that they are not standing for more than a couple of hours at a time) So please post if you wish/plan to be VADER! Be aware that if someone signs up using SL but also other designators, does not necessarily mean they plan to be SL (VADER) for that day. Please be sure to let us know if you plan or want specifically to do VADER for that particular day so we can plan accordingly and ensure we have more than one Vader (Or actually have “One” Vader). If only one Vader signs up for a certain day, then please ensure to let us know a time/shift so that it can be posted for patrons to know when VADER will be there. We will try to post like at Disney, when the Character will be available.

Handlers/Photographers – We NEED You! In order to allow costume members to be in costume, we would like assistance of handlers to help monitor our helmeted members as well as the different display areas. It is difficult to play security while in costume! Especially if we need to maintain proper character! Much like Celebration on their displays, assistance in keeping crowd control, help limit time of kids and patrons at the displays, helping to keep parts in place, and helping to watch “Our People” from prying and poking hands is needed. We would like a photographer(s) throughout the day taking photos or helping others to take photos. Because our display area has increased over the years, coverage and handler requirements have also increased. So assistance in this area is greatly appreciated!

*** Obtaining Admission and Parking Passes and Directions to the Fair -- PLEASE READ ! ***

UPDATE!!! - WE NO LONGER NEED PASSES! Due to the difficulty with acquiring and mailing parking and admission passes, an arrangement has been worked out with the Fair where we will now simply provide the names of participants at the parking / security gates. PASSES NO LONGER NEEDED.

**** ATTENTION DROID OWNERS **** - There's always HUGE interest in droids. If you have a droid, please consider bringing your creation on one or more of the days. The fair has kindly created a “Droid Room” by the loading dock doors for keeping the droids near our display area.

This event is open to ALL costume types; however, 'hard' & helmeted costumes are strongly preferred. With regard to Rebel Legion costumes, Rebel soldiers, X-wing pilots, and "hero" characters (provided the member bears a resemblance to the character they are portraying, Leia, Han Solo, Amidala, etc.), are preferred. The Fair management prefers costumes that looked like they just stepped out of the movie TK, Clone, TI, TB, TR, BH, etc.

Our Legacy at the Fair has always been as an Imperial presence, so preference for 501st members will be to always maintain a strong Imperial representation, allowing Rebel Legion members to make up the Rebel force. Since we have many members that are also RL members (as long as a balance between the Imperials and Rebels can be maintained) dual membership GGG members may do a 'stint' in one costume type (Imperial), and switch to the other (Rebel). We prefer the un-helmeted characters act as character handlers whenever possible but we also need assistance as display handlers.

Blasters, light sabers, and prop weapons are authorized. 501st GGG & RL rules are in effect with that regard.

*** Fair Info ***

The Fair environment is a hybrid of sorts... it has the crowds of a Con, but with the atmosphere of a Theme park. Our large props (Tank, etc), special effect lighting, and sound, provides the perfect venue to create Star Wars 'magic' for the guests which are predominantly families with kids.

In addition to our usual 'guarding' of our base camp, it's possible we may receive permission to occasionally roam the Fairgrounds (assuming we have sufficient numbers to continue to adequately man the indoor display and the Fair provides supervisory security. (Note: Our excursions outside the Exhibit hall **must** be known in advance (since we are escorted outside by Fair security). There have been issues in the past of members venturing outside on their own. Members are not permitted to roam freely outside our area without prior arrangement (for security reasons). We have a *great* relationship with the Fair, and should endeavor as always, to maintain our typical high professional standards.

We have always been an extremely popular attraction at the fair, with many kids (and parents) remarking how they come back each year mainly to see us.

*** GGG Event Details ***

- For the purposes of deployment, we will be on site from 11:00 AM through 7:00 PM. Members are NOT required to remain for the entire period, but asked to be there for a “Shift”. Our goal is to have constant coverage of our area throughout the day, with members able to take shifts.

- Free parking and entrance will be provided to all who attend *in costume* (as well as officially designated handlers & photographer). We have a large / secure changing / break room for our exclusive use. It is equipped with tables, chairs, mirror, and lots and lots of water and snacks!

- The environment is a comfortable, air conditioned indoor exhibition hall.

- Food vouchers are provided for all designated participants for use at selected food vendor at the fair. Water and lots of snacks are provided as well.

This is a 'formal' event, meaning while in public view, members should remain in full costume (and refrain from removing buckets or walking around with flipped up visors.) Our dressing/break room is very close to the exhibit should the need arise to remove your helmet. As always, we are trying to portray as realistic a presence as possible.

After your 'shift' or during breaks, you are free to roam and enjoy the fair. Most fair rides and attractions are free. They also usually have some pretty well known bands booked that play later in the day/evening. Visit http//marinfair.org/ for more fair info, or to see who's playing on what days. There are also nightly fireworks over the lagoon as an additional incentive to remain until the end of our appearance time, and hang out afterwards.

Typically, we are 'understaffed' on weekdays, and especially on the 4th of July. As an incentive, for those that attend on July 4th, we will see to have extra pass access to provide free admission for a friend or family member. This we would need to know in “advance”!

Due to helping with the City of San Francisco fireworks display on July 4th, I (Mike Morris) is not able to attend the fair on Tuesday, July 4th, (ironically the most highly attended day of the Fair) so Karen Katich with Tami Ashford will be the Team Leaders on that day.

We really want to have multiple "hero" characters signing up for the same day(s) (Darth, Boba Fett, etc); (signing up for shifts each day will help with having these characters on the floor throughout the day) Even if someone is already showing as signed up for a particular character, please sign up as well! It is preferable to have more than one per day so we can ensure we have at least one available throughout the day. If you have more than one costume, please feel free to bring them.

Quite frequently, members will be approached by other Fair vendors and asked to either pose at their displays for photos or to endorse their display / products. We are not always able to accommodate the vast majority of these requests. However, there have been instances where commercial products were being displayed / promoted and we are obviously not allowed to endorse or promote them. If you are requested by other vendors for photos or other endorsements, please first Read the 501st GGG policy on this and consult with the team leader (s) on duty at the time before accepting.

Obviously, the GGG display has priority over others requests and our display should NEVER be left “unoccupied”.

*** Opening Day - Ribbon Cutting ***

I would also highly recommend being present in costume for the "Ribbon cutting" ceremony (just prior to the Fair's official opening- 10am-11am) on Friday, June 30th. Each year, we are asked to 'roam' the crowds outside the turn styles, providing entertainment for the guests in line just prior to the Fair's grand opening. And I can tell you from experience... you will feel like a rock star! If you like attention from kids, you'd be hard pressed to find another event with this level of enthusiasm for us. Just ask those who've done it... it is very rewarding!

Kid's Day is Friday, June 30th. Kids 12 and under get in for free. There are LOTS OF KIDS!

This is a somewhat complex event to coordinate, and the more up to date info I received regarding member participation and numbers, the better equipped I am to keep abreast of our needs. So please endeavor to report any change as to your status or availability ASAP to the Lead Members (Mike Morris, Karen Katich, & Tami Ashford). Also, don't hesitate to post, email, or call (Mike Morris: cell 650-218-7412) (Karen Katich 925- 265-3046) (Tami Ashford 925-808-8359)

I will be there as many days as I can and will cover as many shifts as I can. I plan on bringing both Chewie and my Jedi. Yes I'm also doing my officer with the GGG.

I love this event and am always happy to help in any way even as a non costumed handler or as exhibit security.

Thanks to everyone who have signed up so far! Much Appreciated! I verified some info from our Fair Contact and would like to update you all on the following info:

1. We will have the same display area and size.
2. We will have the same changing room/break room.
3. We will have the same Droid Room built.
4. Members names will be on a list for the Security Gate. A list will be provided to Security Each DAY. Make sure I know about you attending that day No Later Than the Night Before!
5. Yes we will have a food voucher for each member. The contact needs to know the total number of members attending NO LATER THAN - JUNE 28.
6. Cut Off Date for list of names attending: JUNE 28th (Preferably JUNE 26th)
7. If you plan to bring a family member for the 4th of July - Please ensure that I have a name so that they are added onto the entry list for that day! Note: Food vouchers are not given for family members.

8. Weapons Policy *** See Notes Below***

*** Note 1: I specifically asked about the weapons policy at the fair and if they had changed due to the recent event in Europe as well as the one at the Phoenix Comic Con. I was informed that there has been NO CHANGE in the policy regarding our use of "Blasters, Lightsabers, BFG, or other props used in our costuming". Members are to maintain the use of their props according to the Guidelines of the 501st/GGG. Members should not point any blasters (etc) at any patron even if requested (i.e. being placed under arrest). Please inform any patron that it is due to the Emperor's request so that a trooper may not accidentally blast someone before they can be properly interrogated! (But it is both GGG as well as Fair policy for safety reasons).

Note 2: Carrying your prop weapons into and out of the building when transporting your costumes/props to the changing room. Please ensure that your prop weapons are covered (via a blanket, towel, carrier, etc) so that patrons may not mistake them for other than the prop that they are.

Note 3: Walking the Fair Grounds or outside the display area. We have not had an issue that has not been addressed regarding this in the previous years. Members are allowed just outside the building, but technically should ANY member want to WALK AROUND the Fair grounds in costume with their props, we are supposed to notify Security. There are patrons who attend the fair that are unaware of our group and may call into question the prop "weapons" that our members carry. If you do wish to walk around the Fair Grounds, please ensure that you have at least 1 Handler or Un-Helmeted character with you. This is to ensure the safety of our members due to the limited visibility under the Helmet! I know several members have done this in the past with no issues, but I would like to ensure and at least guard against anything that possibly might happen.***

Special added note.... For those of you that have signed up for "All Shifts".... Please let Tami Ashford or I know a time frame you plan to take a break for lunch on those days. The reason for the shift assignments was to ensure that we have characters throughout the day and that not everyone leaves at the same time for a lunch break (and then we don't have any costumed characters). Otherwise, please coordinate with each other on that day to go in small groups so that others are in costume while one group goes to lunch, and then switch. This would be much appreciated both by me as well as the patrons who have asked in the past "where are the troopers?".

Handlers for both our Characters, as well as Handlers for the Displays are needed. Since our display area has grown over the years it has become harder to manage the interaction of the patrons with the displays as well as with our costumed members. For those who have done the Handler Training, this is a great event to put all that training to use! LOTS of KIDS!! Lots of hands and lots to watch out for! I could really use help with keeping an eye on displays as well as our members who will be interacting with the patrons and taking photos with them by the displays. Our members come first and foremost!
But if we can have any extra people to help manage the displays it will allow me to also be in costume more as well. Any assistance is appreciated!
Please ensure that the Handlers name (if not a GGG/RL member) is added for those days so that I can ensure that their name is added to the entry list!

Photographers - I would like to have at least one photographer per day. They can be Handler/photographer. But it is nice to have someone dedicated to taking photos each day or be there to take photos for the patrons with their phone or camera. If you can assist in this it is appreciated. If you are a handler and wish to help, remember that you are a handler to our members and their safety first.

I will try to update with any more info as I get it!

Just a final thing.... Here is a list of the display areas planned for this year:

1. Jabba the Hutt w/ Han in Carbonite
2. Greedo Table Scene
3. Hoth Ice Cave w/Wampa Creature
4. Detention Block backdrop
5. Detention Block Imperial Console
6. Millennium Falcon Cockpit
7. Info Table

If you have trading cards or items you wish to have out, they can be placed on the info table.

Thanks again to all who have signed up!

Looking forward to another great FAIR!!!

I guess they finally found me out - I can't troop as Luke or Anakin anymore since I don't resemble the actor, even though my costumes do. lol

Matt,

Who says you can't? This is not a "Formal" event that requires the person to resemble the actor. All Rebel Legion Costumes are allowed.

If you wish to attend in Rebel Costume (Luke or Anakin) you are most welcome to! Just let me know!

Matt, this is the same request they had going back to when I finally worked it out so that RL could go to the fair many many years ago. It's as if you forgot this is the same request form we've had for probably 8 years or so when you kept asking me to get us invited, this was part of the stipulation the organizers had (the resemblance word has been in there for years).

Just like Disney SWW - we had to be generic characters in the parade and people who were lucky enough to get in as face characters had to submit directly to Disney for approval beyond being just an RL approved costume. I'm thinking beyond 'how does the costume look.' And the Rose Parde. Granted the Marin Fair is not Disney, but I was told way back when by the organizers the desire was to have this be a Disney level character experience. And that was why you wore Endor Luke or Jedi Anakin as I recall, and Dale his Rebel Pilot? Some of those first few years? Granted, the Marin Fair is not Disneyland so maybe the interpretation for this event is looser.

So, if Karen is saying you can go as Luke, then you can. So how about just ask next time, and provide a quote of the instructions that are in question as how to interpret them Smile But seriously, this is much of the same verbiage the request has had for many years dating back to my first year as BCO and it comes from the event requester, not RL.

Sorry for the delay. I plan on attending the first day. I'll go as an X-wing pilot if I can get temporary approval while awaiting final approval, or else I'll attend as a Jedi. Thanks!
