One question: In the standards for QGJ, it says that boots should have eight straps, but I'm seeing wide-spread mention of Motorcowboy's boots, and they only have seven. Are the Motorcowboy boots acceptable for Qui Gon costuming?

Do you have a link to the boots you're referring to? I'm starting to collect notes on a QGJ costume myself. :)

They're at http://motorcowboy.com/products/star-wars-qui-gon-jinn-boots.html.

I exchanged email with him, and he said that he can remove the zipper, install laces up the front opening, and put velcro on the inside ends of the straps for no additional charge.

That written, they are kind of spendy. But handmade, and everyone I've talked to who has bought boots from him loves them. So... as soon as I find out about the number of straps, and whether eight is a hard and fast rule, I'll probably start saving for a pair.

Well, there should be six straps up the shaft, and two over the foot.
The difference with motorcowboys is that his boots only got one strap over the foot. Perhaps you could ask if the second can be added?
