I disagree. If the CRLs and supporting images call for the items to be weathered then they should, as they would be getting approval before the "first troop weathering" would even occur Smile

Overall you are looking quite wonderful & I can't wait to see this finished; you're going to look awesome. I understand the pain of weathering something so pretty, though. It's always tough but once it's done the item's got a whole new charm to it Smile

Thanks very much Cassanda!

And fear not, Jyn would look odd with shiny boots, so I'll be weathering them as appropriate. I actually love weathering stuff! I'll probably go with actual dirt versus doing any real damage to them because they really are too beautiful to abuse like that Laughing

I now realize I posted the start of Jym's comlink project, but not the painting & finished product. So that I have everything that's done here in one place, here's the rest of that part of the build.

On the com link I used the same amazing metalizer paint I used on Jyn's tonfa. For anyone unfamiliar with the paint, it's airbrushed (only) on, allowed to cure for 15 minutes (I think) and then buffed. The buffing reveals a beautiful, real metal looking finish and shine. It runs rings around any metallic paint out of a rattle can.

IMG_8107 by Natalie Black, on Flickr

In the photo below you can see the metalizer paint in action. The top of the comlink shows the paint before buffing, the bottom edge has already been buffed out. So shiny!

Oops! Masking pulls off your paint? Instant battle damage =)

It's so pretty, but Jyn wouldn't have something quite so pristine. On to some weathering!

Yeah, I've not done a good job keeping this thread up-to-date, so be prepared, I'm about to vomit a ton of WIP photos.

Jyn's shirt...

Used McCalls 7360 as a base pattern. It had the required seam across the back shoulders and also included a more SA double seam sleeve.

I removed the front placket, drafted a new collar and relocated the back sleeve seam so that it met up with the back shoulder seam per the movie used shirt. (Both of which need to be flat felled seams).

I didn't find a stock linen fabric with a color that made me happy, so I picked up white linen and embarked on a rather OCD exercise in color matching my dye.

On with the photos...

Jyn's vest. So deceptively simple looking. So chock full of random found items. Every time I looked at a photo of this I noticed something new, some detail to add to the checklist.

There's a pattern for the front in the Stardust Sisters FB group that many Jyns use for their vest. I think it's a good place to start, but has a number of proportion issues that make it not as screen accurate as it could be. I spent more time than I'd care to think about counting lines of stitching.

Onwards with the vest...

Patterning and top stitching done, it was time to turn my attention to the facings and lining. While we never see them in the movie, there's no way you can convince me that Jyn doesn't have hidden pockets at her disposal, so my vest will have some secret pockets in the lining so I can keep my scan docs/credits/datapad safe while I'm out and about as Jyn.

I found a great tutorial for hiding pockets inside a jacket lining and it worked like a charm.

All of the pieces are done. Now to assemble this into something wearable.

In the interest of breathability I went with a natural cotton batting for my Florida climate. However the natural cotton stuff is thinner than the typical poly batting, so I ended up using more layers to achieve the same result. Only time will tell if that was a good move or not. Worst case? I pull open the back and swap it out later.

Oh hey, look! Another detail that was discovered on the vest. Each pocket has an eyelet in the gusset. OCD is satisfied with this addition.

The addition of a collar with precisely 3 rows of top stitching and it's looking like a real thing.

Oh... so you thought the vest was done? Ha ha ha!

Let's look at that back... and all the individual tie quilting that has to be done is a very specific pattern.

I pulled an image that someone had gone through and highlighted each of the tie points in the pattern and scaled it to fit the back of my vest. The quilting shouldn't reach the edge of the vest, and it can't go higher than halfway up the armholes. Ah, details...

And then there's the final details - yet more greeblies and bits for the front, and finally, at long last, the weathering.

In addition to acrylics, I used Otter fabric wax for the weathering. Already can see a difference applied to just half of the vest.

PostPosted: Sat Jun 29, 2019 9:56 pm    Post subject: Pants Reply with quote

Time for some pants for this costume. And like all things Jyn, the pants can't just be simple pants.

Required elements included a center seam up the front and back, a casing containing a strap and slide at the knee and a minimum of 8 pin tucks in the outer front panel below the knee. The tab on the waistband hits the right leg center seam. Two accent rectangles are found on the strap casing, as well.

I started with McCalls 7098 as a base pattern. It had the front and back seams and wasn't low waisted. Because the waistband is rather large, I discarded the one included and drafted a new, two-layer shaped waistband that extended to the center seam of the right leg.

You have to delete the pockets in this pattern and you need to flip the direction the fly faces (neither is a big deal if you make a muslin to work out all your fit issues first). The zipper directions that came with this pattern were utter garbage. Pick up the directions from literally any other pattern out there and you'll be in good shape.

I created a muslin first to work out all of my fit issues and to create the additional pattern pieces I'd need to do the pin tuck panel and the strap casing. Jyn's pants should be slim fit below the knee and a bit looser (but not baggy) above.

Nicknamed "The Pants of Pain" in the Jyn group, I found this soft part of the costume the least challenging of the set.

Next up... the boots!

Earlier this year I'd worked out the pattern for the boot flaps in craft foam, and had prepped and painted the 3D prints of the buckles I'd purchased (along with my blaster, tonfa, compad and com link) from 3DPropWorx.

Now, time to finish these up in the leather.

At last, something I'd really been looking forward to finishing up - Jyn's BlasTec A-180.

I'd already primed and sanded when I first received the parts, but was waiting on the paint until I did the wet form on the holster.

I used a combo of rattle can paints and airbrush metalizer paints on the blaster, then some acrylics and decanted metallic rattle can silver to do the weathering.

My first hit paint job on the barrel pieces wasn't to my liking - I could still see some print lines, so I primed and sanded it again before doing a new coat of the buffing metalizer paint and sealer. Worth it.
