Well, I'm building a Yavin Operations Officer and realized I will have many of the same parts as a Rebel Marine Scarif costume. So I thought I'd start my WIP over here too. Here are the pants and boots. The pants are Tru-Spec BDU's. The boots are brown Chelsea boots. What are people doing for boot cuffs? The Swiss gaiters only come in black. So I figured I'd go with brown boot cuffs that I can use in both costumes.

Question: can these Ebay knockoff vests be used with modifications? I realize the comlink would need to be replaced but what else?

If I were you I would just cut a 4-inch wide brown leather strap that is long enough to fit around your ankle plus a little bit of overlap for the closure. Add Velcro or magnets for the closure as well as loops for the anklet greeblies.

I am not a 100 percent sure because I have not made this costume yet, but I think you would only have to switch out transponder and open the pocket so that you insert the new one. _________________ RIAD GRRRL-Squad-Leader 2019-present

Agreed with Pam on the cuff. Just need to find some matching leather, add some Velcro, and you're done. I had the same issue with the black gaiters not matching the brown boots I had originally intended to use, so I ended up getting some black Chelsea boots, too, LOL
A number of people have been approved in those relatively inexpensive vests. As Pam noted, the compad needs to be replaced, and sometimes some minor tweaks and of course weathering, but most work fine, with that. Hard to say if every Chinese seller is following the same pattern (or same factory!) or if some are better/worse than others, though. _________________

I have one of those jackets and have already replaced the transponder. I also had to open up the window so more of the transponder could be seen. I haven't submitted formally yet, but I think it should be fine. _________________ Todd (Toda) - former RAID XO (2017-2019)

Question:
What are people doing for head gear? Trying to decide between the Hoth type hats or the M1 helmets. Both options seem expensive! _________________

Your progress on the boot cuffs looks good.

I am planning on making a blue Rogue One caps for my husband and me. I bought the pattern from FullMetalFantasy on Etsy in 2017. I think that is my best option because mrhemmingsworkshop on Etsy does not sell them at the moment. I think his Rogue One and Hoth caps were the best available. I think the ones from RetroRevivalProps on Etsy are ok but I do not like the ones from creativeartshop on Etsy. All caps are very expensive because they are a lot of work. I used the pattern from FullMetalFantasy to make a mix between a Hoth and Rogue One cap for my husband for a different project and it took me three full days to complete it.
As far as I know, M1 helmets are easy to find and do not cost too much. There is a 3D-print file for the blast shield on Thingiverse. Another source for the blast shield is The3DStarForge on Etsy. I think the only source for the cover is DontRunWithScissorsX on Etsy. Kman has a DIY-helmet cover. I think he did a great job. http://www.forum.rebellegion.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=97973
Purchasing the items will be expensive no matter where you get them. The only way to save money is to make them yourself or ask a friend to make them.

Would these goggles work? I know I'd have to replace the strap.

Not much I can add to PArmstr's post. Yeah, both types of hat can be fairly expensive, unless you DIY it. I owned a vintage M1 helmet already, and had a 3D printer, so after sewing the M1 cover myself, it wasn't very expensive for me, but that was my unique crcumstances. You could work from a replica (plastic) M1, if you can find one (and plastic ones tend to be pretty inexpensive), but the 3D printed covers aren't going to fit those unless it's a pretty close to exact replica. If you don't have a 3D printer, there are services that will print them for you and sell to you for a reasonable price all over the place. Note that the 3D prints still have to be finished: Sanded, painted, weathered, etc.
I'd shoot a message to Mr Hemmings to see if he'll still do the hats/covers... he may have just taken the listing off Etsy, but can still do them. Possibly, at least. Not cheap, true, but truly top notch.
There are a couple other sources for the Hoth-style R1 hats, though. The guy at the Etsy shop Pam mentioned, "FullMetalFantasy" was selling completed hats at one point. Might be worth messaging him, too. I'll post back if I stumble across any of my other old resources for those hats.
If you can sew, or find a friend who can, that Etsy pattern is a good, inexpensive way to go.
Note that the goggles for the R1 soft caps are pretty hard to come by at this point. So that's one strike against the soft cap. _________________
