This page is a listing of the minimum requirements for specific Rebel Legion costumes. Although this list is extensive, it is meant to cover the more common costumes and is not meant to be a complete list of all possible costumes that may be admitted by the Rebel Legion. If your costume is not listed here, you should consult the Legion Membership Officer (LMO) to see if it will be admissable. Changes or additions to this list may be submitted here. For easier reference, the master list has been broken down by character.

NOTE: The costume standards are a guide, yet are not an all inclusive outline of required elements. The judges will be looking for quality of workmanship, accurate execution and use of materials in addition to these general standards check lists. If you have a question about fabrics, colors, and parts choices for your build please contact the LCJs for your category about parts/materials you are considering before you start your build. (LCJ listing here)

Rebel Pilot Costume Standards

X-Wing pilot (Episode IV; VI), Y-Wing pilot (Episode IV)

Required Items:

1.Orange flightsuit with the following details:

a. Code cylinder pocket on outside of upper-middle left arm.
b. Rectangular pocket with a flap closure on upper-middle right arm. Flap should be rectangular shaped.
c. Comm pad pocket on outside of left forearm above wrist.
d. Thigh pockets with rectangular flap closures (upper set required, lower set optional).

e. No visible zippers or snaps.
f. Mandarin-style with pointed tab closure. Collar closes from left to right with the exposed tab on the right side of the throat.

f. Cuffs should close in a similar fashion as the Mandarin-style collar.

2. Mid-calf black boots (Jack boots or engineer boots are acceptable). Leather pull-on style preferred with low heels.
a. Boots should be largely unadorned. No laces or ankle buckles (small buckle at top edge of boot allowable if covered by blousing).
b. No non-black zippers. Any zipper closure must either be hidden or on the inside of the boot (that is, front and outside zippers are not permitted).
c. High-Calf boots are acceptable with sufficient blousing of the flighsuit legs.

3. Silver/grey leg flares in an olive drab or black leg-band holder.
a. Maximum of 8 flares per holder.
b. Flares and flare holder should be approximately 4" (inches) long.
c. Metal leg flares are preferred, but other materials are permitted as long as, when finished, give the appearance of being silver metallic in appearance.
d. Leg flares should be spaced equidistant around the leg.

e. Leg flares can be worn on either leg and should be positioned to so the bottom edge of the leg flare is resting on the top of the boot (that is, no gap between the flare holder and the top of the boot).

4. Light grey/silver grey ejection harness and web belt.
a. Harness and belt are made of strapping material that is 2” (inches) wide.
b. Front and back straps extend up the torso under the flack vest and are secured to either the flightsuit or to the inside the flak vest panels. Attachment must be hidden by the flak vest. The lower part of the harness should fall (or loop) just below the inseam (or crotch area).
c. Two loops of strapping are connected to the front-back strapping (at the lowest part of the front-back loop) and loop around each leg, drooping no lower than the knees.

d. The belt is worn over the front/back harness strap and is closed with a silver/gray "cargo slide" (or roll pin) style buckle. The free end of the belt is looped around the slide so that the excess belt is on the underneath/inside of the belt, not on top/outside of the belt. The right side of the belt contains 6 (six) vertical loops for mini-flares. Mini-flares are made of metal or other materials that, when finished, have a metallic silver appearance.

5. Flak Vest, consists of white front and back cloth (ballistic nylon or similar fabric) panels, contoured to fit over the chest and back where the two panels are of a similar shape/size. The two panels are connected together by straps over the shoulder and under the arms. The flak vest MUST be proportional to the wearer (this is NOT one-size-fits-all), and the following details must be included:

a. The top of the front and back panels should begin at the base of the collar in front and approximately two inches below the collar in back. (Please refer to the reference pics where the flak vest begins right under the mandarin collar.)
b. The bottom of the front and back panels are even and should completely cover the chest while not extending toward the waist any further than one-half to two-thirds the distance from the arm pit to the waist, and should allow for approximately 3” (inches) of visible flightsuit above the top of the belt.
c. The front panel has a series of horizontal ribs. The ribs are created by inserting 0.25" (inch) OD tubing (or similar sized material) through fabric tubes prepared for the tubing. Ribs are separated from each other by a space that is the same width as the finished rib.
The pattern for rib placement on the front of the flak vest is as follows (from top to bottom):
i. Two equally spaced ribs at the top (near the collar).
ii. Immediately below the two top ribs there is a flat wide area with eight horizontal rows of top stitching that is approximately 0.25" (inch) apart (for a total of approximately 2” (inches) of flat area). This area is sometimes referred to as "The Gap".
iii. The remainder of the front panel, below the “The Gap” just described, contains a minimum of 8 – 9 ribs (total number of ribs will depend on the size of the wearer) that continues to the bottom edge of the front panel.
Note: The side strap (described in 5.g. below) does not cross over the front panel. Vests with a missing rib on the lower front panel will not be approved.

d. The back panel has a minimum of 16 equally spaced ribs (based on Luke's ANH flak vest), again, the total number of ribs will depend on the size of the wearer). Again, the ribs are created by inserting 0.25" (inch) OD tubing (or similarly sized material) through fabric tubes prepared for the tubing. Ribs are separated from each other by a space that is the same width as the finished rib. In addition, “The Gap”, as seen on the front panel is NOT present on the back panel.
e. Ribbing on the front and back panels stop no more than one inch from each side (on left and right).
f. The shoulder straps are approximately 2" (inches) wide and sewed in place to the inside of the flak vest panels, thus joining the front and back panels together. Each shoulder strap has rows of horizontal top-stitching (each about 0.25" (inch) apart) across the short length of the strap (or perpendicular to the length of the strap). These stitches cover the entire strap, from front to back.
g. The under-arm straps have one silver "press-release" style buckle on the left and right sides of the vest. The female half of the buckle is sewn to edge of the front panel. The male end is sewn to the end of the strap. Each strap continues back under the arms, and passes through a short sleeve sewn above the second or third rib from the bottom of the back panel. The left and right straps meet in the center, and are adjusted with a black/dark-grey "strap adjuster" style buckle. The excess strap lengths are either trimmed to length or tucked into the sleeves to present a neat appearance. These side straps should ride approximately 2" - 4" (inches) below the armpit depending on the size of the wearer.

h. Be careful when checking references. When filming The Empire Strikes Back, the flak vests were worn “backwards” when compared to ANH and ROTJ.

Note: Please be aware that flak vests from commercial vendors must meet costume standards and be screen accurate. Some commercially available flak vests require extensive modifications for approval.

6. Accurate sized grey chest box with accurate decorations and details as follows:

a. Raised buttons (acrylic preferred) with acceptable color schemes.
b. Separated rocker switches.
c. Accurate knobs (metal or other materials that when finished have a metallic silver appearance.), details, pin stripes etc.
d. 1" - 1.25" (inches) diameter ribbed grey hose or aviation hose. One end of the hose should attach at the left-bottom of the chest box and the other end should connect to the suit in some screen-accurate manner (tucked up into the flak vest, attached to flightsuit, etc.).
e. Chest box is secured around the collar and the back with olive drab nylon/polypropylene/polyester/cotton(canvas) straps. The strap around the collar has no fasteners. The strap around the back has a silver or black "strap adjuster" style buckle in the back. Excess strap from should be either trimmed or otherwise hidden to present a neat appearance.

f. The Chest box is worn low on the chest (with the top of the box near the bottom of "The Gap") so the bottom (around the back) strap passes below or along the bottom of the front flak vest panel.
g. (LINK TO PILOT FORUMS where box design pics are located).

7. Code Cylinders (Arm Tools) in left shoulder pocket.
a. Two minimum, four maximum. Metal or other materials that when finished have a metallic silver appearance.
b. Cylinder heads showing should resemble screen accurate representations.

8. Black gauntlet-style gloves.
a. Leather or pleather gloves preferred. Cloth or rubber gloves are not permitted.
b. The cuff of the gauntlet must present a "flared" appearance when worn.

9. Accurate Comm Pad (size, details, 3-dimensional, coloration, etc.) visible in the comm pad pocket.

Formal Requirements:
You must have at least one of the following items to be accepted:

1. X-Wing helmet with Star Wars-style decoration.

a. Helmet has a Mohawk design and raised side panels as seen in the films.
b. Trapezoidal cap on the front of the Mohawk with the appropriate design.
c. Amber or dark grey colored visor covering the eyes (maybe be fixed or movable).
d. White chin cup with black elastic straps. Elastic straps should be fixed to the inside of the helmet.
e. Black weather stripping around the “ears” and neck borders.
f. Paint scheme, including pin stripping and decorations should resemble those seen in the films. Blatant “modern-world” or other sci-fi-fantasy genre images/designs are NOT permitted. Helmets should look as though they belong in the Death Star Trench sequence.

h. Original Trilogy Pilot Helmet Gallery is found here: http://www.rebellegion.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=41855

2. Mini-flares on belt. A mix of filled and empty slots are okay.

3. Accurate belt buckle on web belt, as described in 4.d.
(NOTE – All references above to "screen" or "accurate" are indicators that you should be comparing and matching closely to screen-cap reference examples. Always refer to reference pictures for details of construction.)

Required Items Flight Suit
The flight suit is a petroleum blue, one-piece flight suit/coveralls in a material consistent with screen references. The fabric should have a slight sheen (such as acetate or bomber silk) and be of sufficient weight to create a somewhat puffy look (which may require the suit to be lined). The coveralls feature several details:
  • The front zipper is hidden by a strip of material of the same color and material as the suit.
  • The sleeves have knife pleats from the bottom of the collar to the wrist, with each pleat approximately 1/2" (inch)/1.3 cm (centimeter) wide, made of an off-white fabric of a similar material to that of the suit, and a shade or two darker than the color of the flak vest. The pleating is inset with piping along the edges. The strip of pleats is 3" (inches)/7.6 cm wide.
  • The flight suit features contrasting top stitching in a beige-colored thread.
  • The collar closes at the front with two snaps. The collar is also padded and features a horizontal gray or silver zipper along the sides and back to create the appearance of a hidden hood.
  • A commpad pocket on the left sleeve with an open "window" that sits above the wrist and is made of the same blue fabric as the suit.
  • There are two chest pockets with curved openings that wrap around the sides of the torso and the ends are stitched into the side seams of the suit, like Nomex flight suit chest pockets.
  • There are two upper thigh pockets with curved openings.
  • The right front thigh has a cargo-style kneepad pocket with a rectangular frame at the top, and has a blue webbing pull tab on the bottom flap and a side pen pocket.
  • There is a rectangular pocket on the left front thigh with a vertical gray or silver zipper.
  • Another pocket on the lower portion of the left leg, which is rectangular in shape and has a horizontal gray or silver zipper at the top.
  • The right lower leg has a rectangular pocket with a horizontal gray or silver zipper at the top, off to the outside of the leg.

The flak vest consists of a front and back panel made of a white or off-white material (ballistic nylon or similar fabric) and is contoured to fit over the chest and back where the two panels are of a similar shape and size. The two panels are connected together by straps over the shoulder and under the arms. The flak vest MUST be proportional to the wearer (this is NOT one-size-fits-all).
  • The two panels are connected together by straps over the shoulder and under the arms.
  • The flak vest MUST be proportional to the wearer (this is NOT one-size-fits-all).

  • The bottom of the front and back panels are even and should completely cover the chest while not extending toward the waist any further than two or three inches past the armpit.
  • The front panel has a series of horizontal ribs. The ribs are created by inserting 0.25″ (inch)/.65 cm clear air line tubing (or similar sized material) through fabric tubes prepared for the tubing. Ribs are separated from each other by a space that is the same width as the finished rib.
  • The side straps attach together via a black plastic strap adjuster or a silver metal strap adjuster, one on each side, rather than a purse clip/buckle like the Original Trilogy version.

This small commpad, similar to the Hoth Rebel trooper's, consists of a white thin rectangular base with teeth on the upper edge, a triangular slope and an orange, red-orange or gold screen or mesh in the center of the slope. The commpad is attached to the gauntlet of the left glove and is positioned with the teeth facing to the wearer's right.

Leg Flares
This item consists of a leg flare holder and a set of eight leg flares. The holder is olive drab in color and is made of webbing or fabric. It wraps around the lower leg and fastened together in the back with Velcro. Running the center of the holder is a thinner strap of the same material sectioned off into eight loops. In each loop is a leg flare, which are cylindrical in shape, starts off narrower at the top and has a wider portion at the middle. At the bottom it narrows in again, has a wide ring, and then narrows once again to a flat end. They are silver in color. OT X-wing pilot leg flares will not be accepted.

Gloves
Grey, beige or black gauntlet gloves in a heavy fabric, suede, or suede-like material, accurately styled. The gauntlet has five to six lines of pleated stitching going all the way around, and the glove has four wider pleats on the top of the hand with the first three pleats that are closest to the fingers being the same size but smaller than the lower pleat, which is wider. There is a small Velcro strap on the inside top of the wrist behind the thumb.

Boots
Mid-calf black boots (Jack boots or engineer boots are acceptable). Leather pull-on style preferred and with low heels. No laces or ankle buckles (a small buckle at top edge of boot is acceptable if covered by blousing the suit legs to hide them). If there zippers on the boots they must be on the inside of the leg and must be black.

Optional Items Your costume must have at least one of the following items...
  • An X-wing pilot helmet of accurate style and decor. Original Trilogy or Rogue One variations are acceptable.
  • Up to twelve belt flares (six on each side) that are silver air line hose connector fittings or replicas of similar shape and detail, which fit into the belt flare loops mentioned above. A mix of empty and filled flare loops are acceptable, but no more than six flares per side. They should not be taller than the width of the belt.
