Why Y- Wings?.... Because only Farm Boys fly X-Wings

Somehow without talking to each other Tim and myself both decided we wanted to make Y-Wing Pilom Uniforms, this on paper was easy, but the more and more we looked the harder it got. A character that is seen on screen for less than two minutes across 9 movies we had to rely on the Star Wars Costume Book, or the Tome of Accuracy as we nicknamed it, but even then there was stuff you cannot see.... namely the back, and what's under the vest on the jumpsuit! This was a costume we couldn't just buy off the shelf easily, so we decided we would make as much of it as possible ourselves.

We spent hours researching, drawing out, watching Return of the Jedi, planning and sourcing components from around Australia and 3d files around the wor;d to make these happen!

We dyed the fabric a custom shade of blue/grey, we patterned the jumpsuits and sewed them together based of the few reference photos in the Costumes Book. Months after starting we walked into Spotlight and they had the ideal colour on the shelf.... sigh, of course they did.

We patterned the vests as well, 3D printed the Greeblies, hand sewed them on, stuffed the vest with wadding and weathered the vest with coffee.
The Aurebesh patches were designed and hand sewn on. The Celebration on Endor BBQ scene has a few glimpses of the rear so we modeled that as best we could.

The hose was made of cord around a sleeve that we again weathered with coffee and attached via 3D printed magnet attachments Tim Designed. (the sleeve is twice as long as the cord to achieve the stacked look)

The belt was made by hand with the addition of belt flares from Imperial Boots and the leg loops with locally sourced metal sliders, these were then attached to the belt. We found the belt box files on the Rebel Legion Forum, we printed and made clips for their backs.

The gaiters were hand made from duck cloth with buckles attached via hand sewing, these were weathered first via our coffee method (we drank a lot of coffee) and took a number of passes to ensure they were dirty enough.

The boots are from Imperial Boots and the gloves are from Wampa Wear / Imperial Boots.

The helmet was 3D printed from purchased files from Golden Armor and then sanded repeatedly, (20+ hours each) painted and then weathered, then weathered some more, and then again, we used black, browns, beige and burnt umber to ensure the weathering took on a more realistic look.
The leather like chin piece was made from vinyl wrapped around thinner cord and glued on, took a few goes to find the right set of glues to make this happen, in the end it was Hot glue that worked best.

The lens was 3D printed, then a silicon mold made before it was vacuum formed out of PET, we then dyed it pink, again we took a few goes to get the dye the right colour and for the lens to hold the colour. We had originally wanted to use clear Worbla or similar to mold it by hand but that was a losing battle. We initially had the lenses mounted to low so ripped them out and raised them inside the helmet to get the right look.

Attached are the photos we supplied for approvals

We have now pulled the patterns back out, grabbed some green fabric the same as used here and started patterning out some nice new A-Wing Jumpsuits that will hope will be an even closer match to the screen used as the Y-Wings we built here...

Nice on on the costumes! I'd like to do a Y-wing pilot sometime myself.
