Today I gave the boots an acetone wash to deglaze them. A LOT of black dye is coming out of them...

I did a quick test with a couple brown dyes and it is not visible on the black. I need to remove as much of the black as possible, or, I may have to resort to painting them (which I do not want to do).

They are also essentially brand new condition, so I may wear them around and beat them up a bit.

I know other members have had very good luck using leather paint- like the ones Angelus makes. So if you end up unhappy with the dyeing, paint is something that has worked for others.

Yes, I can paint them, but I'd rather not.

With leather items, I prefer to see leather, not paint. Might as well make them from Polyurethane if you're painting them.

I have gallons of acetone, so I'm going to get more aggressive on the boots.

The jacket and shirt have shipped, so perhaps another week or two and I'll have those in hand.

I received my shirt.

The jacket is crap (not Poe's, but the one for Rostock that came with the shirt) but the seller is remaking it from appropriate material. I am also TRYING to get him to alter his pattern slightly so it is more accurate.

Even for a custom size order, the lead time is weeks, not months. And (including the shirt) it was $75 so there is a glimmer of hope he can make an economical jacket that could be used for Cassian, because what he ships now, cannot. The details are mostly hidden by the vest on Rostock so it should work there.

But the shirt I think will work. It fits well enough (sleeves are a bit short but it's under a jacket anyway no no biggie) but the color is a bit... odd. Sort of a pale mustard yellow color. (They must have got a deal on surplus fabric from 1974). It may be dyed if I don't like how it presents.

Anyway, it's something. I will throw it on with the jacket for a pic to see how odd the color looks under the jacket. It's just not what I envisioned; however for all I know, it is the most screen-accurate color Poe shirt out there. Nothing really looks as it does on screen.

This costume is somewhat tertiary at this point, with Rostock, my current NASA flight suit and this in the works at once. ANH Solo is far in the background...

Thanks for the update Jim.

We can give you some feedback once we see the pictures of it on.

Thank you.

It's tertiary at this point, but something I collect pieces for as they become available.

I'll see if I can get a picture up today some time.

Here’s some pics of the shirt under the jacket.

And one out in the sun to get the full mustardy goodness.

I guess the color is pretty bad with no comments in nearly a month.

Oh I'm so sorry Jim, I'm not sure what happened there as i remember typing a response?

It is quite yellow and looks like it might have sheen on it? Although that might be the photo. I wonder if you could use dye remover? then maybe a really, really light coffee bath? The standard says natural, eru or very light tan. Light coffee might work nicely.

Otherwise could you seam rip the shirt and use it to make a pattern?

I think it does have a bit of a sheen to it, yes.

As far as turning it into a pattern: someone that can properly sew might be able to. If you wanted me to recreate it in aluminum, I might have a better chance of success...

I could try a bleach bath easily enough. Then a coffee bath, or dilute brown dye perhaps? and I think a few washes will reduce the sheen somewhat, but I can always sand the surface a bit too if needed.

If the fabric is a 'sheen' fabric washing it won't reduced that, sand papering might make it look more distressed than it's supposed to be, but I've not tried lightly sandpapering that type of fabric before?

If it was me I'd cut a tiny piece off from inside the hem, or from where it will be tucked in and you wont miss it, then try the bleach bath and sandpapering on that to see how it comes out -

Everyone has things they are more comfortable with, i never thought I'd be trying to work with foamex and bondo but ive been able to do that because people who know how to do it have supported me. If you did decide to take the pattern off this shirt, its actually easier than it sounds and there are quite a few tutorials on how to do that. Just so you know the support is there should you want it.
